Clay-Brooks shoot 56, lead Highway 9 Challenge by 2
By East Alabama Sports Today
CENTRE – Brennan Clay and Andrew Brooks birdied 10 of the first 11 holes at Cherokee County Country Club and scored two eagles on the back nine to shoot 15-under-par 56 and grab the first-round lead in the Highway 9 Challenge.
They lead by two shots over Matt Rogers-Jeremy McGatha and Cory Etter-Caleb Bowen. Etter and Brooks won the tournament last year.
The leaders birdied 1 through 3, then 5 through 11. They eagled 14 and 16, with Clay draining a 30-foot birdie putt on 15 to keep the momentum.
Clay (No. 8), Billy Thompson (No. 5), Steve Aultman (No. 12) and Marcus Harrell (No. 17) won closest to the pin prizes.
The tournament concludes with a scramble and 1 p.m. shotgun start at Pine Hill Country Club
