Calvert, Smith lead Etowah Open

Leaders shoot 1-under 70s, lead by two shots

GLENCOE – Chad Calvert and Scott Smith were the only players in the field to post scores under par Saturday and shared the first-round lead in the Etowah County Open at Briarmeade Golf Course.
Smith, a multiple champion of this event, and Calvert, a top 10 player on the Calhoun County Golf Tour, shot 1-under-par 70 and opened a two-shot lead over Blake Fulmer. Randy Lipscomb and Kevin Johnson are another shot back at 73.
Luke Armstrong, another Calhoun County Tour player, is among three players sharing the Championship B flight lead at 78.
Calvert’s round included three birdies and two bogeys.
“I hit it everywhere, but I scrambled all day,” he said. “It was a struggle all day. This whole summer has been a struggle for me.”
Calvert started the season by winning the Indian Oaks Invitational, but hadn’t finished higher than eighth in any of the other five County Tour events he played.
He said to wrap up the season with a bookend victory Sunday would be “nice … just to know I can still compete up there for something.”
