3 local players headed to Golf Channel national championship, McGatha wins Match Play opener, tournament notices

Three Calhoun County players are on their way to Tampa today to play in The Golf Channel Am Tour national championship.
Lance Evans and John Lindsey are making a return trip to the event, this year at Innisbrook Resort and Spa, the home of the PGA Tour Valspar Championship, and this time they’re being joined by Trey Stone.
Evans is playing in the Championship Flight, Lindsey in the Jones Flight and Stone in the Sarazen Flight.
Evans led the Order of Merit on the Birmingham Tour, winning five times, including the Birmingham Tour Championship. Lindsey led the Order of Merit in his flight, winning twice. Stone was fourth in his flight’s Order of Merit, winning at Anniston CC.
The tournament begins Tuesday.
MATCH PLAY: Third-seeded Jeremy McGatha took down Billy Thompson Friday in the Calhoun County Match Play Championship, 6&5. He made seven birdies in the round,
He will play reigning county champion and sixth-seeded Ott Chandler in his next match.
UPCOMING EVENTS: There are still a few spots available for the Fusion FC Charity Tournament Sept. 17 at Silver Lakes. Proceeds from the tournament go to defraying the costs for players who might otherwise be unable to play youth soccer. Entry fee for the four-man scramble is $65 per player. The seventh annual CDP Employee Association three-man scramble is Oct. 10 at Cane Creek Golf Course. The tournament benefits the family of Derek Jensen, a former colleague who was killed in an auto accident in 2014. Proceeds go to an education trust fund established for his three children.
