Saturday volleyball: Final spots in Elite Eight get filled, upshot is Saks and Jacksonville will play in 4A quarterfinals.

MONTGOMERY — It took the state tournament for Saks and Jacksonville to land on each other’s volleyball schedule this year.
The teams had played each other as area and county rivals for years, but this year they didn’t meet at all. That changes Wednesday when they meet in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A Elite Eight in Birmingham.
Saks defeated Andalusia in five sets to claim the No. 3 seed out of the South. Jacksonville lost to Madison Academy in the North regional championship game for the No. 2 seed in the North. The teams, 10 miles apart, play at the Crossplex 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
“The girls knew it was a possibility,” Saks coach Randy Law said. “I figured they (Jacksonville) would win it (the North regional). We were trying our best not to be the fourth seed (from the South).”
Oxford also wrapped up 6A regional play. The Lady Jackets lost both of their matches and will be the No. 4 team from the North — they play South No. 1 Spanish Fort (56-4) — but they’re in the state tournament for the first time 12 years.
Calhoun County 1A rivals Donoho and Sacred Heart and 5A Alexandria also are playing in the Elite Eight.

SAKS (33-20)
Lost to St. James 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-10)
Defeated Andalusia 3-2 (13-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13) for No. 3 seed out of the South — will play Jacksonville in Elite Eight
