Two East Alabama teams avenge earlier losses as program sweeps all four Central Youth League championships
By East Alabama Sports Today
ANNISTON (Nov. 19) – The East Alabama Gators had a landmark day for their program Saturday.
The Gators broke through a barrier they hadn’t been able to clear since their inception five years ago, winning all four age-division championships of the Central Youth Football League. And winning in a big way.
In order at Anniston High’s Lott-Mosby Stadium, the Gators 75s defeated the East Side Eagles 33-0; their 95s beat Fultondale 41-0; their 115s beat Fultondale 42-14 and their 135s beat the East Side Eagles 50-16.
“That proves it’s the best year we’ve had,” Gators director Antwon Fegans said. “I’ve been wanting to do it because we’ve been winning three, losing one, winning three, losing one. It’s big for the program to get all the kids on the same page.
“Trying to build winners up, that’s a big focus of the program. We take young kids and we start teaching them how to win early and have them carry on.”
The wins by the 115s and 135s avenged their only losses of the league season. Fegans said that was a big motivator.
“Our boys came to play today,” he said. “It was like a revenge thing. We had a real tough week of practice and focused on what they did good and what we didn’t and cleaned it up. We changed up some things. We didn’t take the teams lightly.”
Fegans will now take two of his Gators teams – the 95s and 135s – to the 48th annual SnapperBowl Classic in Panama City, Fla., later this week.
