OXFORD — Makayla Kidd scored eight fourth-quarter points to help her Oxford girls basketball team pull away to a 57-43 win over Faith Christian Thursday night at the Oxford Sports Arena.

The 6A Lady Jackets (3-1) defeated the 1A Lady Lions (2-6) for the second time this season, but it was not easy.

The scrappy Lions battled every point and were within six late in the third quarter before Oxford went on an 11-2 run that ended in the fourth quarter.

The half-court trapping of Tremeria Britt and Kidd defense created turnovers that got the Lady Jackets’ running game going.

“Our second half-court trap was good,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “We had more intensity in the second half. We missed a lot of opportunities, but they were a very scrappy team. I was proud of our effort tonight.”

The Lions played tight defense in the first half that slowed down the Lady Jackets’ running game and kept them close with nine free throws. Faith led 7-6 late in the first quarter until a couple of buckets by Tremeria Britt and Justyce Smith gave the Jackets a 10-7 lead at the end of the quarter.

Britt ignited a Yellow Jacket surge late in the second quarter with a 3- and 2-point bucket. Faith’s Kristin Covington hit four free throws for the Lions as they pulled within 27-18 at the half. The Lions shot 24 free throws to just seven for the Lady Jackets.

“They are a well-coached team, fundamentally sound and you cannot give up free throws at the line because they will make them and they made the most of their opportunities,” said Bennett.

Britt’s 17 points led Oxford in scoring. Kidd added 13. Justyce Smith muscled her way to nine rebounds and Acacia Kidd came off the bench to haul in eight more.

Faith was led by Sydnee Johnson’s 11 points. Logan Boyd scored nine of her 10 points in the second half. Emily Sills had nine points and hauled down seven rebounds. Covington had eight points and seven rebounds.

”Our intensity really improved tonight,” Faith coach Bradley Dawson said. “We have had some rough film sessions this week in analyzing some of our more recent performances, but it was a great effort tonight.

“We wanted to run when we could, but then slow it up if nothing was there and play under control. We got a little out of control. We are so young that we are still learning how to grasp that concept.”

Cleburne County 68, Saks 45

HEFLIN – Chelsea Parker had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds leading three Cleburne County players in double figures as the Lady Tigers improved to 5-0.

Parker scored 11 of her points in the first quarter and 13 in the first half. Alex Casey scored 14 points and Shawntavia Boyd had 12.

Saks’ Tee Tee Jenkins led all scorers with 23 points.

Jacksonville 52, Alexandria 40

JACKSONVILLE – Kyra Williams scored 20 points and Aniyah Robinson hit four 3-pointers as the Lady Golden Eagles turned back a 29-point, double-double performance by Alexandria’s Bre Bradford.

White Plains 52, Ohatchee 6

ANNISTON — White Plains used tight defense and balanced scoring to take down the Lady Indians.

The Lady Wildcats held Ohatchee scoreless until the 5:26 mark of the third quarter and all 10 of their players scored. They have held at least three opponents scoreless in a quarter this season. Shelby Wood led White Plains with 10 points.
