OXFORD – Zondrick Garrett scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Monday night to lead Oxford back from an early deficit and beat Clay Central 51-43 at the Oxford Sports Arena.
Garrett buried a couple huge 3-pointers among his eight field goals, blocked three shots and was 6-of-10 at the free throw line as the Yellow Jackets won for the first time on the newly christened Larry Davidson Court.
The Vols even put Davyn Flenord, son of NBA All-Star Gerald Wallace, on Garrett to no avail as the Jackets’ 6-foot-5 freshman had nine points in the final quarter.
Flenord had a big night himself with 17 points and a three-pointer.
The Yellow Jackets (3-2) trailed 17-7 after one quarter and looked to be in trouble, but sophomore guard Eugene Leonard got them going with five straight points to start the second quarter. Ty Davis added two buckets to spark a 14-2 surge that gave the Jackets a 21-19 lead midway through the second quarter.
Oxford took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter when Garrett nailed a 3-pointer. Leonard then scored five straight points to help the Jackets open a 45-38 lead.
Leonard finished with 13 points and Braden Mack had eight rebounds.
“I couldn’t be prouder of a group of guys,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “Each player stepped up to the challenge. Tonight showed us what our team is capable of when we trust each other.”
Saks 56, Wellborn 52
ANNISTON — Wellborn coach Jordan Angle wasn’t sure what to expect when his team took the floor for the first time this season Monday night.
The Panthers were excited to finally get on the floor, one of the last teams in the county to get started, but Angle had “no confidence” going into the game because they may have had their worst practice of preseason workouts Sunday.
They didn’t win their opener, but they gave Saks all it could handle.
The Panthers rallied from an early deficit to tie the game at halftime on Jordan Montgomery’s fade-away jumper right before the buzzer. Then they opened an 11-point lead in the third quarter before Saks rallied to bring it back within one entering the fourth.
“They wanted to go out and win the game; I wanted to win the game, but I wanted to be able to compete and know where we were going into (Tuesday’s) Weaver game to start area play,” Angle said. “We came out in a full-court press and caught them off-guard a little.”
Wellborn led much of the fourth quarter, but with less than 60 seconds left Saks (3-1) forced the turnover that helped it regain the lead for good.
Tre Huguley led Saks’ early surge with 12 points of his team-high 21 in the first quarter. Devaughn Benson added 18 for the Wildcats.
Wellborn’s Blake Hanson led all scorers with 24 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Montgomery finished with 10 points and 12 boards.
“If we can just keep that up, we’ll make a little noise,” Angle said.
Alexandria 43, Southside 41
SOUTHSIDE – Dalton Dodd scored 13 points and when the Valley Cubs (3-0) missed four free throws down the stretch that would have iced the victory they bounced back with the defensive stops to preserve it. Josh Tucker and Jamal Tucker each added eight for the Cubs. Southside’s Tristan Riggins led all scorers with 14 points.
White Plains 77, Weaver 59
ANNISTON – Michael McGuirk and Macey Carr hit 25 of 30 free throws among their combined 50 points that led White Plains. McGuirk was 17 of 20 from the line in a 30-point game; he hit his first seven free throws and eight of his last nine. Carr hit his first six in the first half.
Robert Gaines and Landon Knight led Weaver with 23 and 21 points, respectively. Knight scored 17 in the first half, hitting all nine of his free throw attempts. Gaines scored 15 in the second half.
Coosa Christian 59, Faith Christian 48
ANNISTON – Jordan Griswould scored 24 points, but the Lions only got scoring from five players. Griswould didn’t get going into the second quarter, but by then the Lions had fallen behind 18-8.
