ANNISTON – Macy Carr made two big steals in the final minute of a game that all of sudden had gotten tight and turned them both into points lifting White Plains to a 56-52 area win over Cherokee County in a battle of top 10 Class 4A teams.

The No. 8 Wildcats (6-2) had a 17-point lead at one point in the game, but the No. 7 Warriors (2-1) cut it to one and had the ball after a White Plains turnover with 40 seconds to play.

Carr made one steal and hit two free throws after being fouled to give the Wildcats a little breathing room, then stole the next play and hit a basket to push the lead to five.

“We were on the ropes,” White Plains coach Chris Randall said. “They hadn’t led since early in the game. To be up 17 and then have the lead cut all the way to one and they got the ball and all the momentum, that’s a great time to lose. Then Macy makes two fabulous defensive plays.”

Carr finished with 18 points. White Plains’ Michael McGuirk led all scorers with 26; he had 18 in the first half as the Wildcats opened a 32-23 lead.

Kyle Burgess led Cherokee County with 14 points and played a big role in helping bring the Warriors back. He scored eight straight points at one point in the third quarter – a 2 and two 3s – to bring them back inside single digits.

Burgess hit four 3-pointers in the game, but didn’t play in the fourth quarter after getting hit in the face. The Warriors had 11 field goals through the first three quarters and five of them were 3-pointers.

“He was the only guy who made field goals for them (in the third quarter),” Randall said. “He hit a 2 and two 3s and just like that it was a fight.”

Colin Edwards had seven points and Chris Roden had six in the Warriors’ fourth-quarter surge. Roden finished with 13 points.

“It was really a defensive battle in the second half,” Randall said. “Every bucket felt like a touchdown, like we were against six or seven kids. We were able to find enough guys out of some double teams to get some buckets late.”

And their Carr arrived just in time to get them out of there.

Alexandria 65, Cleburne County 38: Dalton Dodd led three Valley Cubs in double figures with 16 points. Austin Taylor had 14 and Josh Tucker added 11. The ninth-ranked Cubs (6-0) broke it open with an 18-4 second quarter that gave them a 37-14 halftime lead.
