Calhoun County places six teams in the statewide basketball poll; Sacred Heart remains No. 1 in 1A
By East Alabama Sports Today
Apparently, the sanctions that sent half of Sacred Heart’s roster to the bench and led to a Sacred Heart-style beating at the hands of the top-ranked team in Class 7A has done little to dissuade those who work on the statewide high school basketball poll.
The Cardinals, 1-1 since having five players suspended for leaving the bench area in a game against Spring Garden, remain the No. 1 ranked team in Class 1A in this week’s poll. The Cardinals routed Faith Christian in the first game of the suspensions, which are scheduled to run through the Steel City Invitational, then themselves were routed by 7A No. 1 Mountain Brook on Saturday.
They are one of four Calhoun County boys teams and six overall in this week’s poll.
Apparently, the injuries that have decimated Alexandria’s lineup haven’t had a negative effect on the pollsters’ thinking, either. The Valley Cubs, currently with five regulars sidelined with injuries or illness, are ranked No. 8 in Class 5A.
Anniston, which has struggled to hold big leads in recent games, is No. 7 in Class 4A. White Plains, whose play is dominated by Michael McGuirk and Macy Carr, is No. 10 in 4A. Piedmont, regaining its basketball legs after a state championship football run, is No. 8 in 3A.
White Plains hosts Piedmont play Friday night.
On the girls side, Pleasant Valley, currently in the middle of a gauntlet of ranked opponents, is No. 8 in Class 3A. Anniston is No. 8 in 4A.
Here is the complete poll. The next set of rankings are Jan. 11.
