OXFORD – Simeon Shadrix has had a very eventful first week on the Oxford varsity basketball team.

The sophomore guard was pulled up to the big team last Saturday to give it a much-needed extra shooter just in time to play Alexandria at Jacksonville State. On Thursday he went to get a couple shots to knock out the bronchitis that had him feeling “pretty bad.” And then Friday, after fulfilling his obligation for missing practice the day before, he had the game of his young career.

Shadrix hit six of his team’s 10 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points as the Yellow Jackets outran Talladega 84-75 at the Oxford Sports Arena.

Shadrix was 6-for-10 from outside the arc, but it wasn’t like he was coming out of left field to do it. He scored 31 points against Sylacauga in a B-Team tournament at Fort Payne last month, and he hit 12 3-pointers in a summer JV game against, ironically, Talladega.

“Simeon Shadrix is the best shooter I’ve had since I’ve been here, hands down,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “I’ve watched him in individual workouts, I’ve watched him in practice, I’ve watched him in game settings in JV basketball, he is lights out.

“And he’s the type of guy like you saw tonight he can get on a roll and it doesn’t matter where he catches it, at the line, two feet out, if his feet aren’t great. But he’s able to do that because he works constantly on it.”

Shadrix was one of five players to score in double figures for the Yellow Jackets. Eugene Leonard had 18, Zondrick Garrett had 12 and Kendrick Foster and Braden Mack each had 10.

Fred Dickerson led Talladega with 22. The Tigers beat Oxford’s defense for easy layups early and jumped out to a fast 17-5 lead, but the Jackets adjusted and their quick hands quickly brought them back. They trailed 21-20 at the end of the first quarter.

Shadrix hit all six of his 3-pointers in the middle two quarters. His first basket of the game, a traditional two-pointer, 10 seconds into the second quarter gave the Jackets the lead for good. His first 3-pointer broke a 29-all tie and the Jackets never trailed again.

“I just practice my shooting a lot,” Shadrix said. “As soon as that first one goes in you kind of get in a rhythm of shooting. I’m a shooter, so that’s kind of what I do. I just stepped up and made shots.”

Another piece of good news for the Yellow Jackets going forward is Jakolbe McClendon is back practicing with the team. McClendon has been out since suffering a torn meniscus during football season, but he started practicing with the basketball team this week and participated in pre-game warm-ups Thursday.

The Jackets hope to work him back into shape to have him ready for their Huntsville Times Classic opener against defending 5A state champion Mae Jemison the day after Christmas.
