JACKSONVILLE — Pleasant Valley started strong, finished even stronger and gained some major points for a high seeding in the upcoming Calhoun County Tournament with a convincing 84-59 victory over Saks Tuesday.
The Lady Raiders took control of the game with a 24-point first quarter and closed it out with a 26-point fourth. They placed four scorers in double figures — Kara Perry (18), Mac Parris (16), Atleigh Brannon (15) and Emma Hood (15) — but it was what the Lady Raiders did on the other end of the floor that got coach Brad Hood excited.
“It was a good defensive effort,” he said. “We ran a trap to force an up-tempo game. I thought it would be a good statement game for the county seeding meeting.”
Anniston and the Lady Raiders are likely to be the top two seeds when the coaches meet the first week in January to seed the tournament.
Parris helped get PV going early with 10 points in the first quarter. Perry and Hood did their damage in the second half. Perry scored 10 of her points in the third quarter and 16 in the second half. Hood had 10 of her points in the second half, eight in the fourth quarter.
Saks’ Maiya Northard led all scorers with 23 points. Miracle Dennard added 16, but the Lady Wildcats were missing a post presence and that allowed Perry to flourish in the second half.
“I challenged Kara at halftime to be more active and assertive,” Hood said.
Buckhanon dominates in Talladega win
HEFLIN — Camille Buckhanon dominates every time she steps on the floor and Tuesday was no exception as she scored 31 points and Talladega handed Cleburne County its first loss of the season, 55-34.
The Lady Tigers (9-1) have lost post Chelsea Parker to a season-ending knee injury, making the way a little easier for Buckhanon. And with Kiara Akles in early foul trouble, it fell on eighth-grader Haven Freeman to battle the Talladega star.
“She played her tail off, but that’s a lot to handle,” Heflin coach Todd Gable said.
