Friday girls roundup: Valley Cubs make fourth-quarter defensive adjustment, use it to fuel 30-point quarter
By East Alabama Sports Today
GLENCOE — Bre Bradford led three scorers in double figures with 23 points and Alexandria erupted for 30 points in the fourth quarter to beat Cedar Bluff 65-54 in the Glencoe Holiday Shoot-Out and snap a four-game losing streak.
Bradford led the Lady Cubs with 23 points. She had 13 in the big fourth quarter. Destiny Heathcock had 16 and ninth-grade point guard Kameron Simpson added 13.
Curiously, the big fourth quarter came after what seems like a typical drop off coming out of the halftime break. The Lady Cubs were leading at halftime — for the second game in a row — but struggled through an eight-point third quarter and fell behind.
They were leading Oxford at halftime on Thursday, then managed only five points in the third quarter and eventually lost by 10.
“It seems like we always have a terrible third quarter,” Lady Cubs coach Craig Kiker said. “We just challenged them (in the fourth) to pick up the intensity. We changed defenses about a third of the way through the quarter, going to a full-court man, and that created turnovers and layups for us.”
Taking a cue from the boys team’s recent run at the free throw line, the Lady Cubs were 18 of 24 for the game, 12 of 17 in the fourth quarter.
“That is amazing for us,” Kiker said. “That’s where we’d love to be every night.”
