ROCKFORD – Davyn Flenord’s layup with 35 seconds left gave Clay Central the lead and his two free throws with seven seconds to go sealed the Volunteers’ 81-77 victory over Coosa Central Tuesday night.
Flenord, teammate Joe Bullock and Coosa’s Tyus Maxwell all locked up in an old-fashioned shootout. Maxwell led all scorers with 30 points, Flenord had 29 and Bullock had 26 (with six 3-pointers).
Maxwell scored 13 in a wild fourth quarter to keep Coosa in the game. Flenord countered with 11 in the fourth for Clay.
Everyone was on the edge of their seats in the fourth quarter. Coosa scored to take a 77-75 lead and stole the next possession, but missed a contested layup and fouled Bullock on the rebound.
Bullock hit both free throws out of the double bonus to tie the game. Coosa missed another shot, the Volunteers got the rebound and fed Flenord for a driving layup that put his team up for good. The Cougars missed another shot and this time fouled Flenord on the rebound.
Flenord hit both free throws for the final margin.
