The much-anticipated 2017 Calhoun County Golf Tour schedule has been finalized and while the venues remain the same as 2016 lineup some traditional dates have been altered to accommodate activity taking place on area golf courses.
The most significant change to the seven-tournament schedule that will determine the Calhoun County Player of the Year is the annual Cane Creek Pro-Invitational moving to Aug. 4-6 to accommodate the refurbishments underway at the city-operated golf course.
Course operators have removed a forest full of trees on the property to promote turf growth. Plans also call for digging a four-acre irrigation lake as soon as the weather allows and resurfacing all 18 greens, which Cane Creek pro Kenny Szuch hopes to have open for play by mid-July.
“With the tree removal and us getting sunlight and air flow and being able to water, even though it’s going to be four months, I think we’re going to see grass in some areas they haven’t had in 20 years,” Szuch said. “I’m telling you it’s going to be a way better product than anything we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
With the new Cane Creek date, the Pine Hill Invitational moves up a week to July 22-23. The next most significant move is the long-standing Wilfred Galbraith ACC Invitational moving back to May 26-28 to avoid a conflict with the statewide schedule.
The other events on the county slate will be played at Indian Oaks, Cider Ridge, Silver Lakes and the 81st Calhoun County Championship once again at Anniston Municipal Golf Course.
Here are the confirmed Calhoun County Tour tournament dates:
April 1-2 – Indian Oaks Amateur Championship
April 22-23 – Oxford City Championship, Cider Ridge
May 26-28 – Wilfred Galbraith ACC Invitational, Anniston CC
June 24-25 – Silver Lakes Amateur on the RTJ Trail
July 22-23 – Pine Hill Invitational
Aug. 4-6 – Cane Creek Pro-Am
Aug. 19-20 – 81st Calhoun County Championship, Anniston Municipal
“It actually worked out pretty well,” Tour director Jeremy McGatha said. “The spread of all seven seem to flow well.”
Other dates of note:
March 11-12 — Calhoun County Two-Man, Silver Lakes (scramble/scamble)
July 7-9 – Sunny King Charity Classic (ACC, Cider Ridge, Silver Lakes)
July 15-16 — Cherokee County CC Invitational
Aug. 26-27 – Buddy Moore Two-Man, Anniston Municipal
There are plans for a Calhoun County Four-Ball at Anniston Municipal at a date to be determined.
The Calhoun County Match Play Championship is still underway, five months after the pairings were determined. A final four has been established — Jeff Borrelli vs. Dalton Chandler and Gary Wigington vs. Jeremy McGatha — but when the matches will be completed and a champion crowned is anyone’s guess.
Given the inconsistency of the 2016 match schedule, tour organizers have decreed the event in 2017 will be played over a two-day weekend at a still-to-be-determined date after the Buddy Moore. The Rounds of 16 and 8 will be played on the Saturday with the semifinals and finals going the following day.
