Sarah Kilgore hit two free throws in the final 15 seconds to give Alexandria a three-point lead and the Lady Cubs withstood a furious barrage of 3-pointers at the end to eventually put away Wellborn 51-48 on Senior Night.
The Lady Cubs (12-12) held double-digit leads at various times in the game, but Wellborn started getting the ball to Vanessa Carter on the baseline battled back. The teams swapped leads on several consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter.
“I think early in the year we probably would have lost this game,” Lady Cubs coach Craig Kiker said. “As young as they are, they’ve grown up a lot and we don’t fall apart late in the game. As bad as we were in the fourth quarter, we didn’t fall apart. … I’m real proud of where we started and where we are now.”
Kilgore made the two free throws that gave the Lady Cubs the lead and had only four points in the game, but it wasn’t lost on Kiker she didn’t have a turnover.
“Our guards are so young and inexperienced, the more we can limit the turnovers the better off we are,” he said. “It was a big night for her, I thought.”
It also was a big night for Bre Bradford. The Lady Cubs’ leading scorer had 28 points, 17 in the first half.

OXFORD – There is something about playing the Lady Jackets that brings out the best in Pell City’s Mary Denman Luker.
Luker was at it again against the Lady Jackets, pouring in 12 first-quarter points on the way to 27 for the game – and five rebounds – and a 6A Area 13 win that tied the teams for second in the final standings.
The Panthers (16-6) jumped out to a 21-3 lead after one quarter behind Luker. Oxford fought back with a seven-point run capped off by a Makayla Kidd 3-pointer, but Luker added six more points to extend the lead to 35-15 at the half.
“She has been averaging right at 30 points a game the last six, seven games,” Lady Panthers coach Jennifer Lee said of her sensational sophomore. ”This team plays well together and does not care who gets the points. They make the extra pass and get her the ball in good spots.
“We tried to come out fast, ready to play and jump on Oxford early and make it hard to come back. They are a young team and we tried to get off to a quick start. I was proud of (Pell City’s) effort.”
Oxford (5-16) was led by Anna Bolton’s seven points and four rebounds. Halaya Harmon came off the bench to score six points on a pair of 3-point baskets. Justyce Smith, Makayla Kidd and Tremeria Britt had 6 rebounds apiece. – Brant Locklier

Shawntavia Boyd scored eight of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Tigers erupted for 23 points and turned the tables on their hosts.
The Lady Tigers trailed 30-22 going into the fourth quarter, but they shutdown White Plains top threat Shelby Wood and found their own rhythm on offense. Wood scored her 15 points in the first three quarters.
Boyd also grabbed six rebounds. Teammate Kiara Akles grabbed 11 boards and Lauren Brown had five steals. Brown also scored six of her eight points in the fourth quarter.
Pleasant Valley 65, Ashville 36
JACKSONVILLE – Mac Parris, Atleigh Brannon and Mikala Simpson scored 14 points apiece, with Parris and Brannon combining for seven 3-pointers, and the Lady Raiders rolled. Brannon’s first four baskets of the game were 3-pointers. Parris hit all three of her 3s in the third quarter.
Anniston 42, Spring Garden 35
Miajah Bullock led Anniston with 13 points and six rebounds in a low-scoring game between two ranked opponents designed to get both teams ready for the tough road ahead. Kendra Finley and Toniah Foster added nine points apiece for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lincoln 57, Clay Central 28
LINCOLN – Hannah Carmichael led three Lincoln scorers in double figures with 16 points as the Lady Bears wrapped up their area schedule with a victory. Amaz Carmichael had 11 points and Halimah Bin-Yamin added 10. With the win, Lincoln tied Cleburne County for second place in the Class 5A Area 10; they’ll play each other in the first round of the area tournament.
