Wellborn opens its new baseball season today with assistant coaches moving the pieces as head coach Shane Harrell steps away temporarily to attend to undisclosed health concerns.
The Panthers play Munford at home this afternoon. Harrell is still “helping out” with the program, Wellborn principal Chris Hayes said, but won’t be on the field. Until the matter clears varsity assistant Todd Manning will assume the head coaching duties and be assisted by Nick Burns.
“Just like (with) our players, health is the priority,” Hayes said.
Hayes would not speculate how long Harrell’s absence from the coaching box would last.
Harrell wasn’t immediately available for comment.
Munford is 1-0, having beaten Childersburg in its season opener Monday 13-3. Draven Campbell went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two stolen bases to lead the Lions’ 12-hit attack. Marshall Clay, Zay Britt and Dakota Green all drove in two runs. Clark struck out nine in four innings to get the win.
