Prep roundup: Spain Park junior finishes with a flourish, leads Lady Jags to first-round golf lead in Hoover

HOOVER – A bolt from the blue helped Caroline Waldrop get on a roll late in the round to pull away from the field and lead Spain Park to the first-round lead in the Hoover Girls March Madness Invitational.
Waldrop chipped in for birdie on 16, then made birdie putts on 17 and 18 to shoot 3-under-par 69 at Hoover Country Club. The junior was the only player under par on the damp, chilly day and holds a three-shot lead over Fairhope’s Virginia Green as the tournament moves to Bent Brook for the final round.
Waldrop is going for her fourth straight win. So far this year she has shared medalist honors at Auburn and, last week, won at Prattville and Silver Lakes.
Her round Monday helped the Lady Jags post 230 as a team and open a three-shot lead over host Hoover.
White Plains posted 295 as a team and is 13th in the 20-team field. Hannah Dyer had the Lady Wildcats’ low round, a 92.
Two players in the field scored holes-in-one. Emma Cox of Providence Christian aced No. 12 and Huntsville’s Savannah Johnson, playing in the group with Waldrop, aced No. 17.
