Hayes leads Piedmont to a pair of wins, going 7-for-9 with a homer, 4 RBIs and stifles No. 1 Cherokee County

CENTRE — The Piedmont Bulldogs are no strangers to getting off to a slow start in baseball season, but once they get in a groove, it’s hard to get them out of it.
And they are in the groove again.
The Class 3A No. 10 Bulldogs swept a doubleheader Saturday, taking a 10-2 decision from 5A Charles Henderson and an 11-5 victory over the Cherokee County, the top-ranked team in Class 4A.
The Bulldogs (13-8) have now won eight of their last nine games.
In the win over the neighboring Warriors (17-5), winning pitcher Taylor Hayes helped himself by going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. He also tossed six innings of five-hit ball, giving up just one earned run and a walk with 14 strikeouts.
Bailey Graves also had three hits for the Bulldogs and drove in two runs. Easton Kirk had a pair of hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Logan Pruitt had a double and three RBIs. Mason Mohon had a hit, a run and a RBI.
Jy Lockridge led the Warriors at the plate by going 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Josh Decker delivered a hit and two RBIs. Gunnar Gable had a hit and a RBI. Colin Brewer and Cade Gossett both finished with a hit and scored a run apiece.
Piedmont began its day with a win over Charles Henderson. Once again, Hayes led the Bulldogs at the plate by going 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Taylor Morrow homered, singled, scored two runs and drove in two.
Mohon had two hits, while Kirk, Graves and TJ Fairs each had a hit and drove in two runs. Michael Rogers delivered a hit and scored two runs. Derrick Baer and Nick Johnson both had a hit and scored a run.
Pruitt posted the win. He went the distance, giving up just two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
The day’s first game was an extra-inning affair in which Charles Henderson edged Cherokee County 9-8 in nine innings.
The Warriors scored six runs in the seventh to tie the game, but Charles Henderson scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 9-7 lead. The Warriors scratched a run across in their final at-bat, but couldn’t score the tying run.
Brewer had three hits for the Warriors, including a triple. Chris Ray also delivered three hits, including a double. He also drew a walk. Edwards and Decker both delivered a pair of hits. Mason Rodgers singled and walked. Gossett and Ledbetter both had a hit.
