Oxford softball falls from top spot; 4 county softball, 3 baseball in state listings
By East Alabama Sports Today
The idea of top-seeded Oxford being the No. 1 team in the state when it opens the Calhoun County Softball Tournament would have been a touch, but, as they say on TV, it ain’t gonna happen.
After a week in the top spot, the Lady Jackets fell to No. 2 in the statewide softball nomination poll. The tournament opens Tuesday.
Alexandria (4 in 5A), White Plains (6-4A) and Pleasant Valley (6-3A) are also in their respective top 10s.
Among teams of local interest, Lincoln is 6 in 5A, Handley is 8 in 4A, and Spring Garden and Ragland are 3 and 8, respectively in 1A.
“Rankings mean different things to different people,” Oxford coach Wendy McKibbin said at last week’s tournament seeding meeting when the Lady Jackets were still No. 1. “… It’s how you perform at the end of the season in your area, regional and state playoffs. It’s a nice honor to have but at the end of the day you still have to go out and play.”
Oxford (7-6A), Jacksonville (5-4A), Piedmont (9-3A) are the only Calhoun County teams in state baseball listing. Previous No. 1 Cherokee County fell to No. 3 in the 4A poll after Saturday losses to Piedmont and Charles Henderson.
Jacksonville and No. 10 Hokes Bluff continue their 4A Area 12 series Today at Henry Farm Park.
