Donoho’s Jacob LeCroy was 1A-2A boys medalist and Oxford won its first ever sectional in girls golf in 6A; complete scores
By East Alabama Sports Today
Jacob LeCroy took advantage of his local knowledge to shoot the best round of the day and Buddy Ray shot the best round of his career in helping Donoho make a run at two-time state champion Westbrook Christian before finishing second in the Class 1A-2A Section 3 tournament at Anniston Country Club.
LeCroy managed the course and the wind to shoot even-par 70 and win medalist honors by two shots over Westbrook’s John Hilliard Catanzaro and William Wethington. Ray shot 73 and finished fourth overall.
The Falcons shot their best score of the year (300) and finished five shots behind the Warriors, which bodes well for their chances going forward. Section and Valley Head also qualified their teams for the sub-state tournament next week at Gadsden Country Club.
“It was pretty tough out there today, the wind was howling,” Oxford coach Garrett Burgess said. “It wasn’t easy for those guys. I think it was definitely three or four shots harder than a normal day on the course.”
In addition to LeCroy and Ray, the Falcons counted a 77 from Jack Svensen and an 80 from Holden Abernathy. Harrison Hughston (84) completed the team. Their previous best this year was a 306 at Oxford’s tournament.
Donoho’s John Hutto (88) qualified as an individual, as did Cedar Bluff brothers Mark (74) and Nick (82) Sawyer.
LeCroy’s round had no wild swings nor did it get blown around by the fierce winds of the day; he had one birdie and one bogey. He had a putt for eagle on the par-5 17th and three-putted No. 8 with a hard lip-out.
“The wind definitely played a factor today,” LeCroy said. “It was blowing really hard and it was tough getting it close; I was leaving myself a lot of 20-footers. I putted and chipped really good today; that’s where it all came together. I have been hitting it good lately and I’m finally getting my putts together; that would be the kicker.
“This is my home course. I played there ever since I was a kid. I know what everything does there. I just had to go out there and do it.”
Ray, a junior, had two birdies (10 and 1) and five bogeys. He was glad to help.
“It definitely was my best round; I never played that good in my life,” he said. “I was kind of talking to my friends out there just trying to pull for the team. It didn’t look like they were playing well and I felt this was my chance to step up.”
“If we could ever have everybody play good on the same day it would be kind of neat to see what we’d shoot,” Burgess said. “If they shot 300 both days (at state), they would have a legitimate chance to win.”
CLASS 6A SECTION 2 GIRLS: Oxford won its first-ever sectional title in girls golf, placing all three of its players in the top five on the way to its best tournament score of the season (261) at Indian Pines GC in Auburn. The Lady Jackets won by 42 shots over runner-up Helena.
Brooke Samson of Park Crossing shot 69 to win medalist, but the Lady Jackets had three of the next four finishers. Kayla Huckeba shot 82, Anna Bolton 83 and Kaylee Reeves 96.
“They just played really, really solid,” Oxford coach David Weeks said. “Our scores have been coming steadily down since March. … I expected us to be either first or second. I really didn’t know anything about one of the schools there and they ended up having a 120, so that wrecked their score pretty bad.”
This will be their third trip at a team to the sub-state tournament, where they will be seeded No. 2 at their home course Cider Ridge behind Spanish Fort.
“I think it’s huge (playing at Cider Ridge),” Weeks said. “You’ve got to think your way around a lot those holes and it’s pretty challenge to walk, but we get to practice and play there pretty much every day. We’ve had some really good matches there right here at the end of the year (beating White Plains an Alexandria), so there’s an advantage because of the course.”
CLASS 4A BOYS SECTION 3: White Plains shot 338 to finish second in the sectional at Limestone Springs behind champion Oneonta.
The Wildcats counted an 80 from Colman Hayes, an 83 from Cameron McCareeth, an 87 from Josh Davis and an 88 from Nathan Griffin. The also qualified P.J. Sotelo (82) and Gavin Burrage (88) individually.
CLASS 5A SECTION 3 BOYS: Eli Antisdel and teammate Gage Ledbetter shared medalist honors with 74s and led Etowah to sectional team title. The Blue Devils had the top three finishers and four of the top seven. Alexandria finished seventh as a team, nine shots out of a qualifying spot, but Hunter Watts (84) qualified individually.
CLASS 3A SECTION 3 BOYS: Logan Forrester shot 70 to win medalist honors by six strokes over teammate Brandon Bright and together they led Geraldine to a runaway win at Twin Bridges.
The Bulldogs put all four of their counters among the top 12 and won by 31 shots over North Sand Mountain. Glencoe and Brindlee Mountain also qualified their teams for the sub-state tournament. Piedmont’s Will Bedwell (78) and Pleasant Valley’s Ethan Johnson (83) were among the four individual qualifiers.
