U.S. Open qualifying

SILVER LAKES — A field of 78 golfers will begin their dream of playing in this year’s U.S. Open on Wednesday when local qualifying takes place at Silver Lakes.
Several players with local ties are in the field, including Layton Bussey, Logan Archer, Lance Evans and two-time Fort McClellan Credit Union Pro-Invitational winner Kyle Sapp. Among the more prominent national names in the field are former Alabama All-American Robby Shelton, a Monday qualifier in this week’s PGA Tour event in Wilmington, N.C. (his fifth PGA Tour start this season), and PGA Tour veteran Spike McRoy.
Nearly 9,500 players have signed up for qualifying across the country. The top players advance to 36-hole sectional qualifiers June 5 to get into the Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. Orville Moody was the last player to go through local qualifying and win the U.S. Open (1969).
