Purple Devils win decisive Game 3 over Millry behind Newton to reach Class 1A semifinals; Munford swept out of playoffs

MILLRY – Grant Newton knows all about coming up big in big games.
The senior pitcher won his second Game 3 of the playoffs Saturday, scattering four hits and walking one as Ragland edged Millry 5-3 to win the third game of their playoff series and claim a spot in the Class 1A baseball semifinals.
The Purple Devils (17-12) will now visit Sweet Water (28-7) for the series that will send the winner to the state championship
Newton also was clutch at the plate. He broke a 2-2 in the seventh with a two-run single. Hoan Hollingsworth, Coby Fuller and Jeremy Burnham each had two hits for Ragland.
LAMP 16-8, Munford 2-2: Charles Singleton and John Morgan each drove in four runs in the 16-2 game and Seth Hudson drove in three in the 8-2 game as the Golden Tigers swept their way into the Class 4A semifinals.
LAMP sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and 10 in the second to build a 13-1 lead. Singleton went 3-for-3 in the game. Drew Harkins hit a leadoff homer for Munford in the second inning.
In the 8-2 game, Gerald Lash snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the fifth and the Golden Tigers added two more on run-scoring ground outs by Hudson and Christopher Phung. They added three more in the sixth. Dakota Green and Tanner Reeves drove in Munford’s two runs in the fourth inning.
