Oxford, Saks open their volleyball seasons with area victories; Wellborn sweeps Ranburne
By East Alabama Sports Today
It takes a special circumstance for a team to open its season with such an important date as an area game, but that’s what the Oxford and Saks volleyball teams did Thursday night and both proved equal to the challenge.
The Lady Yellow Jackets took down Pell City 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-9, 25-22) and Saks swept Munford 3-0 (25-9, 25.7, 25-6).
Pell City brought on a new coach, and because of the timing of the hire Oxford wasn’t able to schedule with its 6A Area 13 rival until most dates were filled to play twice.
The Lady Jackets needed to be strong under the circumstances and were. Alex Gomez had seven kills, 14 digs and two aces to lead the effort. Aumaria Lindsey had 11 kills, Shania Vincent five kills and two blocks, Alex Hammond 12 digs, Makayla Kidd 10 digs, Emma Connell 17 assists and Deinnah Isaac 10 assists.
Saks had scheduled two matches before meeting Munford, but had to reschedule when the start of the season got pushed back a week. The Lady Wildcats play another area match Tuesday with Anniston.
“After the game I told them it would have tough to lose a home area game right off the bat; it would put you in a hole if you do,” Saks coach Randy Law said. “We played really well. Last year we were so up and down, but tonight was pretty good.”
In another match, Wellborn defeated Ranburne 2-0 (25-14, 25-13).
