OXFORD — Net play and defense played a big role for the Pleasant Valley volleyball team Tuesday night as the Lady Raiders defeated Oxford in five sets in a rematch of their Calhoun County Tournament semifinal meeting.
PV won in three sets in the earlier meeting and won Tuesday night 25-11, 15-25, 25-8, 19-25, 15-10.
Mikayla Kendrick led the Lady Raiders (41-6) with 17 kills and seven blocks. Blakely Malsy had 11 kills and four blocks. Alisa St. John had nine kills, 13 digs and seven blocks. Anna Bryant had eight kills, 12 assists and 18 digs. Savannah Williams had nine kills, nine assists and nine digs. Madison Bentley had 32 digs.
Oxford lost to the other County Tournament finalist, Alexandria, in four sets Monday night.
In related news, PV’s Anna Bryant, the MVP of the Calhoun County Tournament, received the Margaret Blalock Scholarship from this past weekend’s Blalock Tournament.
The scholarship, funded through the Alabama Women’s Sports Foundation, was awarded based on overcoming adversity. Bryant shared the experience of overcoming the traumatic brain injury she sustained when a foul ball came into the Lady Raiders’ dugout during a softball tournament.
PV went 3-3 in that tournament. Bryant had 42 kills, 53 assists, 60 digs, five aces and two blocks in the tournament.
In another tri-match, Faith Christian beat Piedmont 25-14, 25-14, and host Wellborn beat Faith 25-19, 25-20. Wellborn rallied to beat Piedmont in the opening match 23-25, 25-18, 16-14.
Erin Cheek led the Lady Lions (29-9) with 25 assists and eight aces in their two matches. Nicole Frechette had 11 kills, Zana Christjohn had 10 kills and Abby Kazanjian had 14 digs.
The Lady Lions are off until Monday when they host their Class 1A Area 10 Tournament. Top-seeded Faith plays JCA at 5 p.m., Sacred Heart plays Donoho at 6 and the winners play for the area championship at 7.
