Alexandria will get a jump on the other Calhoun County playoff-bound football teams as it has decided to play its Class 5A opener at Wenonah on Nov. 9 — a Thursday — instead of waiting for the traditional Friday to start.
The schedules for both schools just made it fair and convenient.
“Both of us are off this week (from playing) and both have no school Friday (the day after the game),” Valley Cubs coach Frank Tucker said. “It worked out.”
The game still will be played at the traditional 7 p.m. kickoff time. Football coaches just love sticking to a routine.
“I just like the fact we’re going to be in school instead of out of school the day we play,” Tucker said.
The Valley Cubs (8-2) are the No. 3 team out of Region 7, while fourth-ranked Wenohah (8-1) is the runner-up in Region 5. The Dragons are riding a six-game winning streak and have held their last three opponents to a total of seven points. and riding a six-game winning streak. Alexandria scored 60 in its last game.
The teams have never played in football before.
