Saturday roundup: PV eighth-grader banks in a pair of 3s against Weaver at Champions; Kidd, Britt come up big for Oxford

Who knew the banks in Alexandria were open late Saturday afternoon?
The Pleasant Valley girls basketball team may have found another outside threat to go with Mac Parris Saturday when eighth-grader Rylee Haynes banked in back-to-back 3-pointers that were only the spark to a 40-30 victory over Weaver in the Champions Sports Academy Girls Thanksgiving Classic.
The Lady Raiders (3-0) now play Collinsville Monday at 3 p.m. Weaver (0-1) will play Saks at noon.

Haynes’ long-distance deposit came midway through the fourth quarter and took PV from an otherwise tight game to a 32-25 lead with 4:20 to play. The Lady Raiders never led by fewer than three points the rest of the game.
“She doesn’t know the bank is open in Alexandria on Saturday,” PV coach Brad Hood said.
Haynes’ first varsity 3-pointer came from the top of the key and got everyone’s attention in the Champions Sports Academy gym by slamming hard into the backboard before dropping straight down into the hoop. Her second one came from just about the same spot but with a little softer touch.
She said it surprised her “very much” when they dropped.
“My main point was to throw it up there because the rebounders have my back, and they just happened to bank in,” Haynes said. “It’s kind of like a pass to them if I don’t make it. I really should get tips from (Parris).”
That can be arranged — they’re cousins.
Parris wasn’t shy about shooting it from beyond the arc either and hit two of them in the first quarter, giving her eight 3s for the season.
The defense Weaver played on the Lady Raiders lent itself to Haynes, who is more of a defensive specialist, shooting the 3s and Hood encouraged her to take them. She scored two points in the opener at Donoho – both from the free throw line — and five Thursday against Gaston. The shots Saturday were her first 3s of the year.
“I stayed on her about just shooting it; you’re an eighth-grader, nobody’s expecting you to do anything spectacular, just go out there and shoot it,” Hood said. “She just kept having confidence and it just kind of got contagious. It was a big tipping point for her and the spark (to the win).”
Speaking of sparks, sophomore Karmyn Sparks gave PV another one with a soft touch underneath. In only her third game of just her second year playing any kind of basketball, Sparks scored 10 points, eight in the fourth quarter when the Lady Raiders matched their entire point production of the first three quarters.
“She’s got a soft touch,” Hood said. “To be a new player, new to the game, to have that soft touch, that’s pretty big.”
The Lady Bearcats, playing their season opener, kept it close for three quarters despite missing top returning scorer Caleigh Cortez and floor leading Rayne Beck being in foul trouble and eventually fouling out. Cortez missed the game because she’s the drum major in the Bearcats’ band that was marching in Chicago this weekend.
Lady Jackets have big game
OXFORD – The Oxford Lady Jackets used a torrid press to race out to a big halftime lead and cruise to an 89-71 victory over Chelsea at the Oxford Sports Arena.
The game was a horse race from the start as the Lady Jackets (4-1) bolted to a 15-5 lead and fought off wave after wave of Chelsea runs to outscore the Hornets in every quarter.
Tremeria Britt had 21 points and Makayla Kidd had 20 to lead Oxford. Kidd was 10-of-11 from the free throw line and Britt 7-for-8.
Michella Edwards was virtually unstoppable for Chelsea as she poured in 40 points, including 35 of the last 56 by the Lady Hornets. — Brant Locklier
