Sacred Heart basketball falls on second day of Holiday Hoopsgiving; PV runner Miller closes strong to finish in top half of Foot Locker race
By East Alabama Sports Today
ATLANTA – Murdock Simmons scored 32 points and the Sacred Heart defense forced 25 turnovers, but Greenforest Christian shot 61 percent from the field and scored 56 points in the paint to dump the Cardinals 81-65 on the second day of the Holiday Hoopsgiving.
Greenforest got a pair of double-doubles from guard Jaylyn Clark (25 points, 10 rebounds) and 6-5 Christian Jackson (21 and 12). The Eagles, who never trailed in the game, scored 44 fast-break points.
While Greenforest was dominant close to the basket, the Cardinals got off to a cold start, shooting only 29 percent from the field in first half. Sacred Heart was playing once again without Alabama signee Diante Wood, who continues to rehab from a preseason ankle sprain.
Victor Wilson (13) and Khalil Watkins (12) also scored in double figures for Sacred Heart.
The Cardinals return to action Monday in an area game against JCA. The Cardinals haven’t lost to a Class 1A team from Alabama since the 2014 state Final Four.

Miller 53rd in Foot Locker race
CHARLOTTE – Pleasant Valley senior Matisse Miller traded paint in a couple traffic jams but put together a strong close to finish 53rd in the Foot Locker Southern Regional cross country race at McAlpine Greenway Park.
The reigning boys county champion ran 17:14.49. He went out in 5:10 for the first mile with a pack of about 80 runners, then got tripped going up a hill and coming down it. He hit the deck both times and was 124th out of 186 runners at the two-mile mark, but known for his strong kick he ran a 5:15 final mile to pass half the field in front of him.
“For my circumstances it was a good race,” Miller said. “I didn’t get the time nor the place I wanted, but all the guys were fun and it was very humbling seeing that there are kids way faster than me just like there will be in college. I had so much fun and recommend it to anyone.”
