Winter storm forces cancelation of Gene Taylor wrestling tournament, alterations to TV24 basketball event
By East Alabama Sports Today
They were anticipating one of the largest fields in tournament history, but you just can’t beat the weather.
Event organizers have confirmed the Gene Taylor Wrestling Tournament at Weaver that was supposed to start today has been canceled this weekend. They remain committed to holding it and are looking to reschedule it over Christmas break.
In an event akin to a mini version of the super sectional, 20 schools and 17 teams were expected, but as early as Thursday night several had called to pull out because of concerns with the weather.
“It was going to be a good one,” Weaver coach Andy Fulmer said. “Hopefully I am still able to pull several with a possible reschedule.”
The weather also forced organizers of the TV24 basketball event at JSU on Saturday to alter their schedule. Now, it is a four-game event starting at 3:30 p.m.
Here is the new lineup:
White Plains vs. Section, 3:30 p.m.
Talladega vs. Plainview, 5 p.m.
Oxford vs. Alexandria, 6:30 p.m.
Gadsden City vs. Chelsea, 8 p.m.
Another dynamic matchup Saturday evening not affiliated with the TV24 event — Sacred Heart at Anniston — remains scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as of Friday afternoon.
