JACKSONVILLE – When Mac Parris let the shot go she didn’t think it had enough to get there, but judging from the reaction of the crowd she had plenty.

Parris hit a shot at the buzzer from just behind the far side of the center circle and gave Pleasant Valley a 50-47 victory over Wellborn Monday night.

It was the longest shot Parris can remember hitting in a game and the first time she ever hit a game-winner at the buzzer.

“Honestly I thought I air-balled it,” Parris said. “When it went in everybody jumped out of their seats. I started walking off looking for overtime, but when I saw I made it I started jumping up and down.”

PV led by four with two minutes left, but Wellborn rallied to tie it at 47 with less than five seconds to play on two more Vanessa Carter baskets. The Lady Raiders rolled the ball into Parris for a final shot and without much time to think about it she picked it up and let it fly.

Parris hit three 3-pointers in the game and finished with nine points. Emma Hood led the Lady Raiders with 25 points. Carter led all scorers with 28 points.

Piedmont 70, Saks 43: All that extra work the Lady Bulldogs have been putting in on their free throw shooting paid off. They went 36 for 53 from the line, making more free throws against the Lady Wildcats than they had in their first four games combined (35-of-71).

“We have been focusing on that at practice,” Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said. “We do like eight-minute conditioning drills and after those eight minutes we go to the free throw line. We play it like it’s a fourth-quarter ballgame.

“I told these girls in the long run free throws are going to win ball games for us. We’ve got to be better free throw shooters than we’ve been in the past.”

Kaitlin Ridley went 16-of-23, singularly making more in this game than the Lady Bulldogs had made in any previous game this year as a team. Kayley Kirk and Sydney Prater were a combined 16-of-21.

Before the Lady Bulldogs began their march to the free throw line they fell behind 7-0. But then they scored the next 20 points in a run that carried into the second quarter to take control of the game. They hit 10 free throws in that run and later scored nine straight points from the line.

“I think it was the fact some of them hadn’t picked up a ball since Thursday with the weather being bad,” Ridley said. “But I knew once we got into that rhythm and they realized we’ve been playing good basketball and we’ve got to settle down and get back to that they did. Kaitlin finally said this is not us let’s get back in the game.”

Ridley led all scorers with 22 points. Prater had 20 and Kirk finished with 17.

Anniston 66, Spring Garden 60: The Lady Bulldogs hit 14 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off Spring Garden. Amoriya Dudley was 7 for 8 from the line in the fourth quarter and finished with 10 points. Toniah Foster led Anniston with 18 points. Spring Garden’s Tyonna Rogers led all scorers with 19 points.

Jacksonville 47, Ohatchee 27: Kayla Broom and Kyra Williams combined for 25 points in three quarters to offset a a big night by Ohatchee’s Tori Vice. Vice led all scorers with 20 points.
