SOUTHSIDE — One day after falling in an ultra-intense Calhoun County Tournament title game, the Oxford Yellow Jackets found themselves in an equally intense area game — this time with better results.
In took three overtimes, but the Jackets completed their first undefeated run through their area since the Larry Davidson era, outlasting Southside 88-76.
“That was maybe the best win I’ve been a part of based on the circumstances,” Oxford coach Joel Van Meter said. “Unbelievable game. Coming off what we came off and having to go play that. We knew it was going to be a dogfight.
“The way everybody feels about the county tournament, it’s a huge deal for our kids. Losing that game created a lot of adversity … then having to play another, an area game, the next night on the road (and win) I think it says a lot about our kids and the toughness they have.”
The Yellow Jackets trailed in each of the first two overtimes and were without their two big men – Markise Davis and Braden Mack – at the finish, but managed to pull it out in the end.
Davis started the third overtime with the sixth of his seven 3-pointers and the Jackets were on their way to a 20-point period. Davis had seven in the third overtime, 10 in the three extra periods and 24 in the game. He also hit a shot from mid-court at the halftime horn and a 30-footer to end the third quarter.
“Other than maybe one or two turnovers he had in the third and fourth quarter I thought he played maybe his best all-around game,” Van Meter said. “He played well deep into the game. I know in the second and third overtimes he had four fouls, but he played smart. He knew we needed him on the floor. He was conscious of that. After a game we didn’t shoot it well against Sacred Heart – dismally — he was able to come back and make some big shots for us.”
Eugene Leonard was 5 for 6 from the free throw line in the third overtime, 8 for 11 in the extra periods and finished with 17. Roc Taylor also had 17 points for the Jackets. It was Leonard’s free throw with three seconds left that sent the game into a third overtime.
“It’s like a broken record – he’s a stud,” Van Meter said. “When it’s game time and everything is on the line you want the ball in his hands. Once we got the lead in the third overtime he went and got every ball.”
Southside’s Chris Lengyel hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. It was a fade-away jumper in traffic that hit the side of the rim, bounced up over the backboard and through the hoop.
Kendrick Foster’s free throw tied the game at 62 in the first overtime and the Panthers missed the potential game-winner at the buzzer.
It was the second triple-overtime game Van Meter has coached in at Oxford. In his second year on the job the Jackets lost in the consolation game of a holiday tournament in Carrollton in three OTs.
