Pleasant Valley’s start-up wrestling program to hold its first home meet today
By East Alabama Sports Today
JACKSONVILLE – Every growing sports program has its milestone moments. There’s that first game, the first win, the first time playing at home.
The first-year Pleasant Valley wrestling program has another one of those moments Thursday afternoon — with the help of a fellow competitor.
The Raiders are holding their first home match in their program’s history, an in-school affair with Wellborn, Saks and Cherokee County that will begin at 1:30 p.m.
“This is extremely important for our team and the kids at school to be able to watch a match live,” PV coach Jonathan Nix said. “With us being a start-up program this will go a long way for the future teams at PV. This will be the first match 90 percent of the students at PV have ever seen.
“Wrestling helps so much with the toughness of a kid. I can really see this sport growing here at PV.”
Give an assist to Wellborn for making it happen. The Panthers graciously offered the date of their match with Saks to the Raiders. Cherokee County also has been invited to the party and now everyone will get three dual matches out of it.
Wellborn is coming off a 43-42 win over Piedmont Wednesday, a matinee match decided by a most-first-points-scored tiebreaker.
“I just want to promote the sport,” Wellborn coach Todd Manning said. “There is no better way to get exposure than to do it in front of the whole school body.
“Talking to (PV and former Wellborn wrestler) Wesley Harrell, he said they had some possible dates to have a home match. I already had Saks coming to me and told Coach Nix we could come to him for them to have a home match.”
Here is the schedule:
Wellborn at Pleasant Valley, 1:30 p.m.
Saks at Pleasant Valley, 2:15 p.m.
Cherokee County vs. Wellborn, 3 p.m.
Wellborn vs. Saks, 3:45 p.m.
Cherokee County vs. Saks, 4 p.m.
Cherokee County vs. Pleasant Valley, 4:45 p.m.
There’s a lot going on at Pleasant Valley these days. The athletic program will hold an Open House for its new weight room Feb. 22 from 4-8 p.m. School officials are expecting a big crowd of school board members, community leaders and alumni.
“This is going to be a special afternoon for us,” Nix said.
