Jackets roll over Talladega

By Brant Locklier
For East Alabama Sports Today

OXFORD – There were a lot of new things happening at the Oxford Sports Arena Tuesday night where the Yellow Jackets pounded eighth-ranked 5A Talladega 87-60.

It was a rare sweep of the season series as the Yellow Jackets (16-9) won the first meeting this season 83-73 in Talladega. No one in the immediate vicinity could remember the last time – if ever – Oxford had accomplished that feat.

And according to the Talladega assistant coaches, it also was the first time a Chucky Miller-coached Talladega team has ever played a game with a running fourth-quarter clock against them. The clock runs continuously once the lead gets over 30 points in the fourth quarter and Oxford found themselves up 78-47 in the first few seconds of the quarter.

“I will take it,” Oxford head coach Joel Van Meter said. “I have so much respect for Chucky Miller and the job he has done at Talladega. We have certainly been on the other end of that running clock a few times with them over the years.”

The Yellow Jackets (16-9) got off to a slow start as they fell behind 8-6 at the midpoint of the first quarter, but then the light came on and they erupted for 48 points in the rest of the half to take a 54-31 lead at halftime.

That lead was 75-46 after three quarters.

There were Jackets everywhere as Talladega struggled with Oxford’s full court press and the Jackets were bombing away from outside – they hit 10 3-pointers in the game – and making brilliant passes for easy baskets on the low post.

Kendrick Foster was red hot from outside as he buried five treys on his way to scoring 20 points. Braden Mack had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Freshman Rock Taylor bulled his way for 13 points and five rebounds. Markise Davis made three 3-pointers in the first half and ended up with 11 points and six rebounds in the game.

“It shows you how far we have come,” said Van Meter. “Talladega has won a crazy amount of games over the years. We were 1-4 at one point this season and our kids did not falter. They did not listen to all the talk going around. They stuck together and worked and worked to get better and they are having so much fun playing the game.”

Jacksonville Christian 65, Georgia SD 36: Johnny Alford scored 12 points and Walker Messer had 10 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Thunder. Chase Vinson and Alex Martin added nine points apiece.

Talladega towers too much

OXFORD – Twin towers Camille Buckhanon and Amaz Carmichael combined for 50 points and 34 rebounds and fourth-ranked Class 5A Talladega erupted in the second half to beat Oxford 65-40 in the Sports Arena.

Buckhanon was unstoppable on the post as she poured in 35 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. Carmichael had 15 points and 15 boards.

The officials let them play in the first half and it was a war on the boards as Buckhanon had 16 points and eight rebounds and Carmichael had six points and nine rebounds. There were only eight fouls called in the first half.

The Lady Jackets (11-13) were down 13 points, but got two 3-pointers from Anna Bolton and one from Makayla Kidd to chop the lead to 32-23 at the half. Bolton, Kidd and Kaylyn Hendrix scored eight points apiece for Oxford.

The Lady Tigers (23-2) have only lost one game to an Alabama team this year and that was Anniston. They came out in the second half and fed the ball inside four straight times to Buckhanon that all resulted in baskets. A short time later it was 45-23. Brant Locklier
