Talladega regains its touch

By Al Muskewitz
East Alabama Sports Today

Chucky Miller is glad to see his Talladega basketball team’s shooting touch return — just in time for postseason play.

After hitting only two 3-pointers in a loss at Oxford two nights earlier, the Tigers drained 10 of the bonus balls Thursday night and took down Anniston 74-52 in their final game of the regular season.

Ashton Duncan and Fred Dickerson both went without a 3-pointer in the Oxford game, but they combined for seven against the Bulldogs. Duncan was 5-of-7 from the arc; the Tigers 10-of-24 as a team. They also didn’t miss a free throw (12-for-12).

“They didn’t hit them the other night, and some of them were in and out, but that’s the way it’s going to be,” Miller said. “So, you’ve got to find ways to win even when you’re not shooting. But if you’ve got some good 3-point shooters in today’s game you’ve got to let them shoot because the nights you’re doing it it makes the other things so easy.”

Duncan hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 26 points, eight steals and seven assists. Dickerson, the MVP of last week’s Talladega County Tournament, had 15 points and seven boards.

“It felt good to get the rhythm back,” Duncan said. “We had a bad game against Oxford, but we went back to practice the next day and did shooting drills and came out tonight and scored and played good and made shots that we’re supposed to make. It was a good run tonight.”

As much as the 3-pointer helped the Tigers, Anniston coach Torry Brown pointed to the trapping defense Talladega went to in the middle of the second quarter for bringing his team down.

The Bulldogs were leading 26-25 when Miller ordered the switch and it sparked an 8-0 run that carried Talladega to a 33-26 halftime lead. The Tigers extended that lead to 12 midway through the third quarter and stretched it even more in the fourth with a barrage of 3-pointers.

“They shot the ball really, really well and that hurt us, but it was that trap,” Brown said. “When they got in their trap midway through the second quarter that’s when the game really turned.”

Piedmont 43, White Plains 42: Seventh-grader Alex Odam hit the front end of a one-and-one with 9.5 seconds left and the Bulldogs held on as White Plains hit a two-point putback near the finish to snap a four-game losing streak.

White Plains came back from a 15-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 40 with a minute left. Carl Myers put Piedmont back on top 42-40, then the Wildcats fouled Odam with 9.5 seconds to play.

Odom hit the front end of the one-and-one to make it a three-point game. He missed the second, White Plains rebounded and missed the tying 3-pointer, but Austin Bussey collected the rebound and scored a 2. The Wildcats fouled Odam again with 0.5 seconds left. Odam missed the first shot of the double bonus, then missed the second on purpose and the clock expired.

Interestingly, Piedmont’s first nine baskets of the game were all 3-pointers, including one by Delo Foster, who’s better known for swatting shots than sinking them. Foster, who blocked 23 shots against Weaver earlier this week, had as many points as blocked shots in the game (three).

Kaedon Jenkins broke the string of 3-pointers with a layup midway through the third quarter and the Bulldogs didn’t hit another trey the rest of the game.

Alexandria 69, Weaver 44: The Valley Cubs used a big game from Dalton Dodd and a big second quarter to pull away from the Bearcats. Dodd scored 19 of his 32 points in a second quarter that was highlighted by a 14-0 Cubs run. Dodd capped his big quarter by hitting a 3-pointer from near midcourt at the buzzer for halftime.

The Cubs were playing their third game in four days and have another scheduled for Friday.

Clay Central 73, Saks 54: Quen McKinney scored eight of his 14 points in the third quarter and Jacquez Bullock scored nine of his team-high 21 in the fourth quarter as the Volunteers pulled away from a close game in the second half. Saks’ DeVaunghn Beason led all scorers with 22 points.

Ohatchee 61, Ragland 37: Ben Glass hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 of his 19 points in the first quarter to stake the Indians to a big lead. The Tribe hit six of their seven 3-pointers in the first half.

Lady Tigers get some payback

Talladega got a big game from Amaz Carmichael and used a 17-1 run over the final 5:33 to run past Anniston 67-54 and avenge its only in-state loss of the season.

The Lady Tigers have lost only two games this season. Their other setback came to Wheeler (Ga.).

“We wanted revenge tonight,” Talladega coach Jannie Keith said. “My girls needed this win – and we got it.”

Carmichael finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds taking up the slack for post partner Camille Buckhanon’s foul trouble. She had the first nine in the 17-1 finishing run, which came after the Lady Bulldogs had taken a 53-50 lead. Her put-back with 4:13 to play put the Lady Tigers ahead for good.

“She stepped up and she made us some baskets when we needed them and I’m very proud of her tonight,” Keith said. “Amaz can play powerful when she wants to. We needed her tonight. I asked her to step up and she stepped her game up.”

Buckhanon had 19 points, 13 rebounds and blocked four shots. Mary Seales added nine points and 10 boards.

Anniston’s Dudley Duo – Allasha and Amoriya – had 17 and 15, respectively, for the Lady Dawgs. Monteiga Clemons was held scoreless and was carried off the floor early in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury. Head coach Eddie Bullock hinted she might miss a week, but return in time for the most demanding part of postseason play.

Talladega was up by nine midway through the third quarter, but Anniston got back in it with Buckhanon out of the game with three fouls. They eventually got it tied going into the fourth quarter.

The big run at the end belied the back-and-forth nature of the game. The lead changed hands four times in the fourth quarter before the Lady Tigers pulled away.

“They just outplayed us,” Bullock said. “We made a few too many mistakes and they capitalized on them.”

Weaver 61, Alexandria 57: Caleigh Cortez and Emily Reed each scored 18 points and combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Bearcats rallied after losing the early lead to give coach Gary Atchley perhaps the biggest non-area, non-tournament win.

Weaver opened a 12-point halftime lead behind 10 points from Reed, but trailed by two going into the fourth quarter.

“We have had some starters our with the flu and have not played well,” Atchley said. “After Tuesday’s debacle we had a talk Wednesday and had a pretty good practice and decided we were tired of losing and we were going to play hard as we could for each other the rest of the season.

“We are just doing everything we can to get ready for the area tournament because (Ohatchee coach) Bryant Ginn will have his girls ready to play.”

Brie Bradford led Alexandria with 11 points — all in the second half.

Wellborn 50, Lincoln 35: Vanessa Carter helped the Lady Panthers get of to a good start with 18 of her 20 points and Katessa Carter complimented her with 10 of 14 points in the second half.

“Our 1-3-1 has been tightening up so with their main player, (Hannah) Carmichael, playing at the free throw line, we were able to trap her and keep her from scoring,” Weaver coach Shanese Morgan said. “We also did our full-court press for most of the first half, which gave us easy scoring opportunities. We shot five 3-pointers and were able to score within the offense at an efficient rate.

Wellborn held Carmichael to 10 points, but Taylor Conway got loose and scored her 14 points in the second half.

Piedmont 68, White Plains 37: Pinky Nation had 25 points and seven rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing streak. Kaitlyn Ridley filled the Piedmont box score with nine poins, six steals and five assists.

Make room for Z

Former Oxford big man and 2017 Calhoun County Tournament MVP Zondrick Garrett is coming back home. Garrett told East Alabama Sports Today on Thursday he has left Friendship Christian/Lincoln Academy and is in the process of re-enrolling at Oxford.

Yellow Jackets coach Joel Van Meter said he hadn’t seen Garrett if the 6-7 forward has enrolled. Garrett said he left the Atlanta-area private school Tuesday after taking his final test and was waiting on school administrators in Atlanta to forward his transcript to Oxford. He said several other players also have left the team.

“I tried to hang on and stay on, but couldn’t,” he said.

By all accounts he was having a good season and felt “like I got a whole lot better” for the experience. When Garrett transferred in the summer Lincoln Academy coach Bryan Lippman said he saw Garrett developing into “a stud … a monster stretch 4 at the next level.”

Garrett said he missed playing with his Oxford teammates and visited many of them during the opening-round games of this year’s Calhoun County Tournament at the Oxford Sports Arena.

It wasn’t immediately known if Garrett would be able to compete for the Yellow Jackets the remainder of the season when he does enroll despite returning to his home school. He does, however, expect to follow the team to its regular-season finale against Hazel Green and throughout the playoffs.

“I would love to play,” Garrett said. “I’m coming back for sure.”

He already has high hopes for next year, predicting county tournament and state titles for the Yellow Jackets.
