Alexandria, Pleasant Valley open their seasons with strong pitching performances

It’s often said pitchers are ahead of the hitters early in the season and that certainly was the case for Alexandria and Pleasant Valley Tuesday as they opened their seasons with strong pitching performances.

Five Alexandria pitchers combined on a one-hitter as the Valley Cubs checked Jacksonville 5-1.

The five Valley Cubs pitchers – starter and winner Brennan Brown, Dylan Dignagi, Jalen Borders, Justin Shaw and Noah Primm – combined for six strikeouts. The only hit they allowed was a single by Jay Patterson with one out in the seventh inning. Brown retired the first eight batters he faced.

The Valley Cubs scored two runs in the first inning without benefit of a hit, then Ryan Taylor scorched a two-run pinch-hit double to highlight a three-run fourth. Layton Ellison and Nate McCallum both had two hits and an RBI.

Brody Phillips and Jackson Almaroad scattered four hits and struck out eight in Pleasant Valley’s 8-0 shutout of Ohatchee.

Phillips went the first six, giving up two hits and striking out six.

Caden Turner and Alex Parris both had two hits in the middle of the PV lineup and Ashton King drove in two runs from the 9-hole. The Raiders scored all their runs in the first three innings.
