SOFTBALL
PIEDMONT – Pleasant Valley clinched home-field advantage in its area tournament Tuesday with a 2-1 seventh-inning victory over Piedmont.
Savannah Williams raced home on Ava Boozer’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to snap a 1-1 tie and Leah Patterson made in stand in the bottom of the inning.
Williams led off the seventh with a double, moved to third on Mikayla Kendrick’s one-out bunt single and then scored on Boozer’s fly. Patterson, who pitched the final five innings behind Olivia Jones, set the Lady Bulldogs down in the bottom of the inning on two strikeouts and a pop up.
The Lady Raiders (19-8) got only three hits. They tied the game with a Bailey Harris scored in the third. Piedmont opened the scoring in the first inning.
Alexandria 3, Douglas 0: Maggie Phillips fashioned a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and drove in all three Lady Cubs’ runs with a bases-loaded double in the third inning. The only hit Phillips allowed was a one-out double in the fourth.
Oxford 11, Pell City 1: Emmali Meads pitched a four-hitter and struck out 10 for the Lady Jackets. Sarah Howell, Crestavia Curry, Ashleigh Reaves and Emma Stephens all had three hits, while Emily Thrasher had three RBIs.
BASEBALL
CENTRE – Jy Lockridge singled home Ian Edwards with two outs in the fifth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and lift Cherokee County to a 4-3 area win over White Plains.
The game was a tight pitching battle between White Plains’ Andrew Norred and Ethan Johnson. Both pitchers gave up four hits. Johnson struck out seven and Norred fanned six.
Cherokee County answered Jake Spivey’s two-run single in the top of the third with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, highlighted by Johnson’s two-run double. White Plains tied the game in the fourth on Charlie Huey’s one-out single.
Hokes Bluff 4, Jacksonville 2: Houston Edwards hit a two-run homer and two Eagles pitchers held Jacksonville to two hits. Dylan Teague gave up two hits and two unearned runs in 5 1/3 innings, and Westin Ball closed it by retiring the last five Jacksonville hitters.
Hokes Bluff grabbed a 4-0 lead after two innings. Jacksonville scored two in the fifth on an error and Blake Morris’ RBI single.
Spring Garden 11, Donoho 0: Austin Slayton drove in three runs and struck out 13 in 5 1/3 innings, Colby Slayton went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Luke Welsh homered.
Donoho’s Hall Billings went through the Spring Garden lineup once unscathed, then the Panthers scored two in the fourth and broke it open with five in the fifth. Welsh led off the fifth with his homer and Colby Slayton hit a two-run double in the inning. Billings had two hits for the Falcons.
Weaver 7, Ohatchee 4: The Bearcats erased a 4-1 deficit with six unanswered runs over the final two innings.
Pleasant Valley 12, Wellborn 3: Alex Parris went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a triple and Ashton King drove in three runs for the Raiders. Brody Phillips, Drew Bonds and Triston Salster had two hits apiece and Colby Nelson had two RBIs.
Jett Smith, Jackson Connell and Dylan Grubbs had two hits each for Wellborn. Connell drove in two runs.
