OXFORD – Donoho’s boys and girls bulldozed their way through the Class 1A-3A, Section 4 tennis tournament Monday without dropping a single match.

Sophomore Cooper Montgomery of Donoho, the reigning Calhoun County boys champion, repeated as Section 4 champion with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Faith Christian’s Jac Myrick in the No. 1 Singles finals. He then teamed with fellow sophomore David Hudson at No. 1 Doubles to defeat Pleasant Valley’s Dakota Herron and Dawson Meadows, 6-0, 6-0 to win that title.

Donoho’s Emma Wiedmer added a Section 4 championship to her Calhoun County championship with a 6-2, 6-1 finals win over Faith Christian’s Zana Christjohn. Wiedmer, a sophomore, teamed with sophomore Virginia Hutto to defeat Christjohn, who played with her sister Sarah Jessica, and claim the No. 1 Doubles crown, 6-1, 6-3.

This is the third year in a row both the boys and girls from Donoho have won Section 4. And the future looks bright, since there are no seniors on the boys team and no seniors nor juniors on the girls squad.

The Falcons made sure there was little drama for the title race, but on the boys side there was plenty of tension for second place. The top two teams qualify for the state tournament April 23-24 in Decatur.

Pleasant Valley’s boys edged out Faith Christian’s, 12-9, in the final point tally. Both teams won 3 matches of singles, but the difference was that the Raiders won 2 doubles matches to 1 for the Lions. Faith Christian is the girls runners-up.

Donoho’s Jack Ballard, a seventh-grader playing at No. 6 Singles, had the tightest matches for the day but prevailed in both. Ballard edged Faith Christian’s Eli Mitchell, also a seventh-grader, 11-9, in the semifinal round. Then Ballard battled 2½ hours against Pleasant Valley’s Joseph Johnson, a sophomore, to win 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-5.

Lily Grace Draper, a seventh-grader for Donoho, had a dominating day at No. 6 Singles. She did not drop a game in the semifinals or the finals.

Donoho’s Claire Hillman won sectional titles at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles.
