Donoho girls in hunt

County, sectional champion Lady Falcons second after first day at state, send 5 to singles quarterfinals, 2 to doubles semis

DECATUR – The Donoho girls tennis team scored 17 points on the opening day and is currently second in the Class 1A-3A State Tennis Tournament at Point Mallard Park. Bayside Academy leads with 20 points.
No. 1 singles Emma Wiedmer reached the quarterfinals with a three-set victory over Whitesburg Christian’s Britney Batey (4-6, 6-0, 6-1). Claire Hillman (No. 2), Marella Hudson (No. 3, bye); Virginia Hutto (No. 5) and Lily Grace Draper (No. 6) also moved into the quarterfinals.
Hillman and Hudson reached the semifinals of No. 2 doubles with a tense three-set victory over Altamont’s Guru and Archana Yarlagadda (7-6, 6-4, 7-5), while Claire Walker and Draper reached the semifinals at No. 3 doubles with a pair of straight set victories. Wiedmer and Hutto fell in the quarterfinals of No. 1 doubles in three sets.
Faith Christian’s Zana and Sarah Jessica Christjohn scored the Lions’ only points when they won an opening-round match at No. 1 singles.
The Falcons are sixth in boys play with eight points. No. 1 singles Cooper Montgomery won his opening match 6-1, 6-0 over Lexington’s Dustin Smith, then fell in the second round. Montgomery and David Hudson reached the semifinals of No. 1 doubles with victories over T.R. Miller and St. Lukes.
In the 4A-5A tournament at the Mobile Tennis Center, Jacksonville’s Jesse Wilson (No. 1), Ben Patterson (No. 2) and Charles Cummings (No. 4) all won first-round boys singles matches. Wilson and Patterson won a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles before falling in the quarterfinals.
In the 6A tournament at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park, Oxford’s Ben Reimer (No. 1) and Seth Turner (No. 4) won a first-round boys matches, while Ethan Fuller and Simeon Shadrix won a first-round match at No. 3 doubles.
