Oxford girls break school record to win sectional title; Huckeba wins medalist, Bolton shoots career-best round
By East Alabama Sports Today
BIRMINGHAM – Every time the Oxford girls golf team has stepped on the course in a big tournament this season it has set some sort of record.
The Lady Jackets did it again Tuesday, posting a team-record 251 in winning the Class 6A Section 2 championship at Highland Park Golf Course.
Kayla Huckeba won her first tournament, claiming honors with a 4-over-par 76. Anna Bolton was second low medalist with her career round, a 79. And Kaylee Reaves tied her career best round (96) and finished in the top five to complete their scoring.
The round beat their old mark of 261, set in last year’s sectionals, by 10 shots.
“That was about as good as we can be,” Oxford coach David Weeks said. “I feel pretty good about it (going forward). I think we’ve got a really good shot to be in the top two (at sub-state) as long as everybody can play like they’ve been playing.”
Huckeba’s round was highlighted by two birdies and several up-and-down par saves. She played her last seven holes in 1-under with the birdie and six straight pars to finish. She shot 75 on the course during a tournament earlier this year.
“I’m pretty excited because this is the first real chance that we’ve had to do well and compete at state as a team,” Huckeba said. “It’s a lot more relaxing on me, for sure. I think we’re going to do good at sub-state and hopefully make it to the state and place.”
