Piedmont’s Stanley, Weaver’s Knight, two Ohatchee lineman help North win its fourth straight in North-South All-Star Game
By East Alabama Sports Today
MONTGOMERY – Piedmont’s Lee Stanley rushed for 38 yards, Weaver’s London Knight caught two passes for 37 and the North scored 21 points in the second half to beat the South 27-14 in the 59th North-South All-Star Football Game Thursday night at rainy Cramton Bowl.
Ohatchee’s Jarrett Ford and Jordan Lowe played on the line for the North. Donoho head coach Mark Sanders was on the coaching staff.
Although neither scored a touchdown, Stanley and Knight both played big roles in touchdown drives.
Stanley had a 6-yard run in the North’s first touchdown drive and a 13-yard run on the touchdown drive that gave them a 21-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Knight caught a 36-yard pass from Sylacauga’s Keaton Wilson, the North MVP, to open the North’s third-quarter go-ahead touchdown drive after it trailed 7-6 at halftime.
The North scored a wild and crazy touchdown on the last play of the game when Athens’ Perry Kirby fell on a loose ball after the South tried to keep the ball alive with a series of laterals.
It was the fourth win in a row for the North and closed the South’s edge in the series 30-27-2. The game was the first to play officially using the newly adopted instant replay rules. Two calls were challenged and both calls on the field were confirmed.
Teams will use it during the regular season this year, but only a handful of schools are said to be participating, including Oxford and Handley.
Wilson scored on two 1-yard runs and a two-point conversion. He rushed for 72 yards on 14 carries and completed two passes for 56 yards. Clay-Chalkville’s Quenton Young rushed for 69 yards on 15 carries.
Benjamin Russell’s Davede Herron was the South’s MVP. He rushed for 111 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns.
The game had an exciting ending. Snapping the ball from his own 7, Tallassee’s Casey Baynes pass to Blount’s JaMarcus Powe-Mauldin in the flat. Powe-Mauldin ran for four years before lateraling to Baynes. Four laterals later, Kirby scooped up a fumble at the 1 and fell into the end zone.
