SOUTHSIDE – Kendal Bumpus is the player who makes the Alexandria volleyball team go and Tuesday night she went off.
Bumpus recorded 31 kills and five blocks and the Lady Cubs rallied from losing two tight sets that might have left others discouraged to defeat Southside in their area opener 24-26, 27-29, 29-27, 25-13, 15-12.
“Kendal’s our engine,” Alexandria coach Whitney Welch said. “When she goes, we go. She’s our alpha.”
The setters did a nice job of getting her and the other front liners the ball. Anna Johnson had 29 assists and Kayleigh Steen had 17.
Mattie Wade had 10 kills and 12 digs, and Kinsley Gregoria had 16 digs.
“I’m not sure what clicked,” Welch said of the turnaround. “Sometimes you just need a wake-up call.”
