Gulf South Conference baseball tournament heading to Choccolocco Park the next two springs
By East Alabama Sports Today
OXFORD — Choccolocco Park has found a replacement for the vacancy left by the Ohio Valley Conference baseball tournament when it secured the Gulf South Conference baseball tournament for 2019 and 2020.
The conference announced the hosting rights in a news release today, but those familiar with the process said the planning had been in the works for a while.
The tournament is scheduled for May 3-7. It’s the first time the conference has held its baseball tournament on an off-campus site since 2014 (UAB) and satisfies their coaches’ desire to play at a neutral site. It isn’t immediately known what other facilities were in the running.
“The Gulf South features some of the best baseball in Division II and we are excited to move our championship to Choccolocco Park and the City of Oxford,” GSC commissioner Matt Wilson said. “The facility is ideally created for our championship and will provide our student-athletes and fans with a fantastic experience.”
The GCS has 13 baseball-playing members, eight will qualify for the tournament.
At least one member of West Georgia’s baseball team will feel right at home if the Wolves’ qualify. Former Oxford pitcher/outfielder Brody Syer is on that team. Choccolocco Park is the Yellow Jackets’ home park.
The OVC played its baseball tournament at the park in 2017 and 2018. That tournament has moved to Rent One Park in Marion, Ill., for 2019 and 2020.
