Alexandria still clinging to playoff spot after falling to Southside; Panthers smother Valley Cubs in second half

SOUTHSIDE – Alexandria took a 14-7 lead on Nate McCallum’s 7-yard run early in the second half, then Southside shut it down and scored 28 straight points to score a 35-14 victory in a pivotal Class 5A Region 6 game.
The loss left the Valley Cubs (4-2, 2-2) clinging to the fourth and final region playoff spot, a game ahead of fifth place Crossville and 1.5 games up on Sardis – two teams the they already have beaten. They are one of only three teams in the region with a winning overall record.
The Panthers (3-4, 3-1) held the Cubs to negative net rushing yardage in the second half and forced four turnovers in the game.
Sam Shaw had 62 of the Valley Cubs’ 116 rushing yards in the game, 57 coming on his first carry of the night. Quarterback Jacob Wells was 8-of-12 passing for 177 yards and ran for their other touchdown.
Devin Burton and Fletcher Swindall led the Alexandria defense with seven tackles each. Kagan Hollingsworth and Shaw were each credited with six.
It doesn’t get easier for the Valley Cubs (4-2, 2-2) as they host second-ranked Etowah this week.
