Officials assessing damage after overnight storms strike field house at Saks first-round opponent Colbert Heights
By East Alabama Sports Today
It may be a little too early to think about it, but the storms that blew threw the state overnight Monday could have a little impact on Saks’ opening-round game in the Class 3A playoffs.
The previously No. 1 Wildcats travel to Colbert Heights Friday night, but what awaits it is uncertain as the storms that hit the state Monday night into Tuesday damaged the Colbert Heights High School field house, the Florence Times-Daily reported.
Colbert County superintendent Gale Satchel told the newspaper the storm tore a hole in the roof, which allowed rain to get inside.
Satchel said head coach Taylor Leathers, the school’s interim principal, and athletics director Lonnie Robinson are working on a plan if the field house at Amos Mitchell Stadium is unusable.
Saks principal Jody Whaley told East Alabama Sports Today Leathers told Saks coach Jonathan Miller at the state coaches meeting Saturday in Montgomery the Wildcats could use the gymnasium to dress for the game.
Of course, that was before the storms hit.
“That’s all I know now,” Whaley said. “I’ll have to reach out to them tonight or tomorrow morning and see what’s appropriate.”
Miller also was unaware of the situation as he practiced his team Tuesday. It’s just another thing they’ll have to deal with being on the road.
“We’ve got to handle the trip up there and leaving school early and go on a three-hour bus ride,” he said. “That’s probably the part you worry about more than anything.”
Now-No. 4 Saks is 8-1 and wound up the third team in a three-team tiebreaker out of Region 6. The Wildcats were No. 1 in Class 3A in Weeks 4 through 8.
Colbert Heights is 6-4 and the No. 2 seed from Region 8. The Wildcats have a three-game winning streak and won six of its last seven.
