Pleasant Valley 44, Lincoln 40: Karmyn Sparks struggled from the free throw line in the Lady Raiders’ season-opening loss, but went 6-for-6 from the line in the fourth quarter to help her team hold off the Lady Bears. Sparks was 2-for-11 at the line Saturday, seemingly changing her technique every time she went to the line, but went 7-for-8 Monday.
“That was huge,” PV coach Brad Hood said. “She just got in the gym yesterday for an hour with her dad and then we all met this morning and shot free throws. She just put time in the gym.
“Towards the end they were really trying to foul and Karmyn was the one who wanted the ball. It was beautiful.”
Sparks finished with nine points. Emma Hood led PV with 15. Lindsey Pritchett added three 3-pointers. The Lady Raiders were 0-for-12 from behind the arc in their opener.
Kayla Morris led Lincoln with 13.
Marble City Classic
Cleburne County 46, Sylacauga 31: Sylacauga held the Lady Tigers’ top two returning scorers to four points, but freshmen Brooklyn McDaniel and Haley Price stepped up to pick up the slack. McDaniel scored 17 and Haley Price hit four 3-pointers in a 16-point game. The Lady Tigers held Sylacauga without a field goal and just four points in the fourth quarter to pull away.
“I hope we’re going to have a few that score for us,” Lady Tigers coach Todd Gable said. “We got in foul trouble so both of (the freshmen) stepped up.”
