RAINSVILLE – Oxford played its second game in less than 24 hours, driving back and forth to the venue a couple hours each night and going to school in between, and looked even stronger than the night before.
The Yellow Jackets returned to the DeKalb Civic Center for the second day of Plainview’s Thanksgiving Shootout and blasted Prattville Christian 72-36.
The Jackets placed five scorers in double figures led by Eugene Leonard’s 18 and Justin Moore’s 18 off the bench.
“I didn’t think we came out with the same intensity, but I thought our press led us to get the game going the way we wanted to get it going,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “I think our ceiling’s very high in terms in where we can get to as a team. I don’t think two games tell you where you gonna get to, but it gives you an idea of what you’re capable of.
“When you travel, come home, go to school, don’t get to do a shoot-around, leave school early, it can be tough. When you don’t have consistency in what you’re doing you can play bad, but when you have a mature team you can figure out how to play well.”
It was the second night in a row Moore came off the bench to give the Jackets double-digit scoring. He had 10 in the opener against Ramsay.
“He’s a sophomore and has the capability of doing that,” VanMeter said. “Tonight he was able to give us that boost off the bench was good defensively. That was big.”
The Jackets will see if they can handle the routine three nights in a row Wednesday in a game that doesn’t promise to be as easy as this one. They play Plainview in what VanMeter expects will be “a Final Four type game.”
“I told our guys it’ll be as good an atmosphere as they’ll play in all year,” he said.
Jacksonville 63, Ragland 41: Jay Davis hit all three of his 3-point attempts and the Golden Eagles shot 60 percent from beyond the arc for the game, pulling away after a tight first quarter for their first win of the season in the consolation game of Ashville’s Coy Smith Memorial Tournament.
Donavon McCain led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals. Davis finished with 15 points.
The Golden Eagles went into the tournament with only three varsity players – McCain, Davis and Nathan Barnwell – as the rest of their roster is football players in transition from that long season. Coach Cordell Hunt filled the open spots with junior varsity players and in their two games together they lost one game by one point in overtime and got a win.
Understandably, it took the replacements a while to get their bearings. In the opener they shot 3-for-20 from the field and scored eight points. Against Ragland, they were 9-for-20 from the field and scored 21 points. Julian Hill scored eight points against the Purple Devils and Hudson Harvey had seven.
“It wasn’t a great situation; unfortunately, most of those guys are tenth-graders and they were going against seniors (Monday),” Hunt said. “But if you play the game and do the little things like box out and limit turnovers you can play with anybody.
“They came with good energy, diving after balls and they rebounded well. Some of the things they could’ve done better is scoring and limiting the turnovers, but they played with good energy. I was very pleased with them stepping up and doing the things they needed to. They did the things they needed to stay in the game.”
The full regular squad will practice together for the first time Monday in advance of Tuesday’s game with Alexandria. The replacements will return to the JV ranks where they’ll get more seasoning and confidence.
Talladega 79, Childersburg 45: Chaztin Tanner scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as the Tigers outscored Childersburg 42-18 to pull away in the Marble City Classic. Tanner also had five assists and three steals. Aaron Green had his second double-double of the season with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
