GLENCOE – The girls basketball teams from Glencoe and Sand Rock have had a history of playing it close the last couple meetings and the latest installment Tuesday night was no exception.
Glencoe’s Anna Beth Giles hit six free throws in the second overtime and the Lady Jackets held on down the stretch to down the reigning Class 2A runner-up 82-78 in a game that had all the intensity of a state final.
“It was kind of crazy,” Glencoe coach Daniel Cook said. “This is two pretty good teams here and it was just a slugfest.”
The Lady Jackets, a Final 8 team in Class 3A a year ago, beat Sand Rock twice by one point last year, the first time with four-tenths of a second left and the second on a free throw with two seconds to play.
They rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit in this one and had chances to win the game at the end of regulation and the first overtime with 3-point shots from Anna Grace Goodwin.
Glencoe forced overtime on Ashley Morgan’s layup with eight seconds left, but she missed the and-one for the lead. The Lady Jackets got a steal, but missed the last-second shot to win. Sand Rock’s Kirby DeBoard forced the second overtime with a 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds after Glencoe rallied from three down to take the lead.
“We talked to the team at halftime and told them Sand Rock is a championship team and we’re trying to become a championship team,” Cook said. “The reason we got down by 13 was some mental mistakes and silly turnovers.
“We told them after the game you stepped up and played at a championship level. This is something hopefully that can carry over throughout the year.”
Neither team was giving an inch. There were 69 personal fouls called in the game and 101 free throws taken. Glencoe was 32-of-64 from the line; Sand Rock was 27-of-37. The Lady Jackets were 14-of-25 in the overtimes, Sand Rock 8-of-11. Sand Rock had six players foul out and it finished with four on the floor.
Glencoe placed five scorers in double figures, led by Anna Claire Hipps’ 15. Abby Vice scored 10 of her 11 in the fourth quarter
Sand Rock’s DeBoard led all scorers with 35 points. Lanie Henderson had 19.
CHAMPIONS GIRLS CLASSIC
Collinsville, Cherokee County play for title
It’ll be an all-Cherokee County final in the Champions Girls Thanksgiving Classic as Collinsville and Cherokee County will play for the title Wednesday night.
Collinsville ensured the all-county final when it dumped Weaver 63-46. Cherokee County grabbed the other spot by knocking off Spring Garden 49-46 in the final game of the night.
It took a while longer to determine the other Cherokee County team in the final. Centre and Spring Garden battled to a 24-all tie in the first half, but the Lady Warriors took control by outscoring Spring Garden 20-11 in the third. Jordyn Starr had eight of her team-high 13, including both her 3-pointers, in the quarter and Crimson Mahannah had six of her seven there.
Laney Kate Johnson helped the Lady Warriors keep pace in the first half with all 12 of her points. Neely Welsh had 11 of her game-high 17 in the first half for Spring Garden.
In the other semifinal, Collinsville hit the Lady Bearcats with a barrage of 3-pointers and opened 35-15 halftime lead. The Lady Panthers collected nine 3-pointers from four players; Weaver countered with three – all from Abby Gaines, all in the second half.
Hadley Hamilton hit four of the shots from behind the arc and finished with 19 points. Kallie Kilgro hit three and finished with 13.
Gaines had 15 and Caleigh Cortez had 14 to lead Weaver. Gaines and Cortez held the Lady Bearcats put on a charge in the second half, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
Lincoln 48, Saks 34: Jayla Morris hit a 3-pointer for her first basket of the game and never slowed down. She scored 15 of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter as the Lady Bears opened a 26-8 lead on the way to their first win of the season.
“Jayla played with a lot of confidence today,” Lincoln coach Amanda Bailey said. “Pregame we talked about dictating the game, playing at our pace, and she seemed to buy in to that. She pushed the ball up the floor today and scored in transition.”
Pleasant Valley 52, Ohatchee 37: Emma Hood scored 18 points and Karmyn Sparks had 17 for the Lady Raiders. Hood had 10 in the fourth quarter and Sparks had 11 in the second half. Ohatchee’s Tori Vice led all scorers with 28 points. She scored 22 points in the middle two quarters as the Lady Indians cut a 12-point first quarter deficit to five entering the fourth quarter.
Hokes Bluff 43, Coosa Christian 26: Maddie Smith hit three of her four 3-pointers in the first half to help the Lady Eagles open a seven-point halftime lead. The Lady Eagles took complete control by holding the Lady Eagles to two points in the third quarter. Smith led all scorers with 14 points.
