Tournament MVP Brittany Rivera was 12-of-14 from the free throw line in the second half and 8-of-10 in the fourth quarter and overtime to help Collinsville rally from a halftime deficit and beat Cherokee County in overtime 59-51 to win the Champions Girls Thanksgiving Classic title Wednesday night.

Rivera was 15-of 18 from the line in the game and led all scorers with 21 points, but she was absolutely clutch in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Lady Panthers were 14-of-18 from the stripe as a team in the fourth quarter and overtime.

The Lady Panthers trailed at halftime 24-16 after being held to just Caroline Brannon’s basket in the second quarter. Rivera and Hadley Hamilton scored six points apiece in the third quarter to get them back in the game. Hamilton’s six came on a pair of 3-pointers.

Cherokee County set the game to go into overtime when Jordyn Smith ran sideline to sideline along the baseline and hit a 3-pointer from the left side with 26.7 seconds left in regulation. Collinsville worked for the final shot and Maggie McKinney’s 3-pointer from the fop of the key with three seconds left bounced around the rim before falling to the floor.

Starr hit four 3-pointers in the game and led the Lady Warriors with 16 points. Laney Kate Johnson had 12 and Kayleigh Hand had 10.

Rivera was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Hamilton and Kilgro, Cherokee County’s Starr and Johnson, Spring Garden’s Payton McGinnis and Macy Reedy, and Hoke Bluff’s Kristen Shields.

Spring Garden 81, Weaver 39: The Lady Panthers took major offense to losing in the semifinals Tuesday and took it out on Weaver in the consolation game. They scored 62 points in the first half – that’s almost 4 a minute – and hit 11 of their 16 3-pointers in the process. Tthey won by 42 without scoring in the fourth quarter.

Four Spring Garden players hit multiple 3-pointers. Macy Reedy hit three of her four in the first quarter when she scored 12 of her game-high 17. Abbey Steward hit three in the second quarter on the way to all of her 15 points. Madison Jennings hit five 3-pointers in the game.

Alexandria 64, Coosa Christian 44: The Lady Cubs finally got some shots to fall and their offense going in scoring their first win of the season. Alexandria scored only 39 points in its first two tournament games, but had almost that many in the second half against the Lady Conquerors when they pulled away from a close game. The Lady Cubs hit nine 3-pointers in the game and four players scored in double figures.

“Shots went in,” Lady Cubs coach Craig Kiker said. “I thought we had been taking good shots, they just finally started going in.”

Hokes Bluff 60, White Plains 35: The Lady Eagles took control of a close game with a 22-8 second quarter and then pulled away with a big fourth quarter. Kristen Shields, Gracie West and Jayden Presley combined for 17 points in the second quarter, then combined for 16 in the fourth. Angel Bozarth had seven of her team-high 12 in the first quarter as White Plains built a 12-10 lead.

Crossville Girls Hardwood Classic
Piedmont 50, Douglas 49:
Sydney Prater’s free throw with 30 seconds left capped a big fourth quarter that lifted the Lady Bulldogs to victory in the opening round of the Crossville Hardwood Classic.

A rough third quarter left the Lady Bulldogs trailing by five heading into the fourth quarter, but they stepped up their defense to fuel the comeback. Kayley Kirk scored seven of her 12 points in the fourth quarter and the Lady Bulldogs hit six of 15 free throws. Prater was 4-of-6 in the quarter, including hitting her last three.

“We were able to settle down and pass the ball over their press for some backside layups,” Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said. “We also had some key offensive rebounds and putbacks by Lele (Ridley). But the defensive effort was the key for the comeback.”

Ridley, an eighth-grader, had a game-high 17 points, nine rebounds (six offensive) and two steals. Prater had 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Z’Hayla Walker grabbed 13 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs return Friday to play J.B. Pennington
