Just the other day Alexandria basketball coach Jason Johnson was lamenting about trying to find some scoring.
Not more than four days after that conversation, the Valley Cubs broke the scoreboard.
The Cubs erupted for 100 points in a 100-91 victory over Fort Payne. Landan Williams had a breakout game, too, scoring 34 points and grabbing 21 rebounds after a slow start.
The 6-foot-7 post had only two points in the first quarter, but he erupted for 11 in the second, 14 in the third and seven in the fourth.
In addition to Williams, Romeo Dye had 19 and Jared Ponder had 12. Dye, too, didn’t get started until the second quarter, but Ponder did start fast with eight in the first. On the other end of the scale, Adam Young scored all seven of his points in the fourth quarter, going 5-for-6 from the free throw low.
“The kids loved it,” Johnson said. “The way Fort Payne plays it forces you to play a fast-paced game. We just got great production from everyone, then Landan played the hardest game so far in his career. Maybe this will give our kids confidence.”
Fort Payne, which plays this way all the time, got 27 from Ty Brooks and 26 from Keyshawn Hightower. They combined for 8 3-pointers.
