OXFORD – This Oxford basketball team is starting to put the pieces together and there is no telling where it is going to lead. The future looks that bright.

Tuesday night the Yellow Jackets dismantled the No. 1 team in Class 3A, Plainview, 70-32, in front of a raucous crowd at the Oxford Sports Arena.

It was such a contrast from the first time the teams played this season. The Yellow Jackets lost a wild 109-99 double-overtime thriller at Plainview in late November, but burly sophomore forward Rock Taylor was still involved with football and didn’t play. This time he was there for 12 points and 15 rebounds.

“Rock was a beast out there tonight,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “Our team fed off his energy. We put him on (Caden) Millican and you saw what happened.”

The Jackets held Plainview’s big scorer to only seven points. Millican had 27 in the double-overtime game. Koby Tinker had 38 in that first game, but had only xx Tuesday.

Actually, three players had double-doubles for the Yellow Jackets (7-3). In addition to Taylor, junior center Zondrick Garrett put up a dominating 26-point, 12-rebound, five-dunk and eight-blocked shot performance that included a pair of 3s, and senior guard Eugene Leonard hauled down 10 rebounds to go along with 12 points and running the Oxford fast break.

“Zondrick is learning how to stay on the floor and stay out of foul trouble, and you can see him staying out of those foul situations as the game goes on,” VanMeter said. “And Eugene is learning how to stop and hit that pull up jumper instead of drawing a charge and that is huge.”

Of course, the biggest factor in the game was the Jackets’ defense.

The Bears (8-1) have a reputation of burying teams from the outside, but Oxford held the reigning state champions to an amount of points they usually score in one quarter and to only 1-of-20 shooting from 3-point range – and that one came midway through the third quarter.

“The difference tonight was we played them different,” Van Meter said. “We went into the first game and were going to press them and run a guy at the ball and double and rotate, but they’re just too good to do that against. We looked at our strength and our strength is defending. We guarded them man full-court and when they got in the half-court we did a good job switching because we are connecting.

“I can’t stress how much it was a complete team effort defensively. I don’t want to single any one person out that much because I think our chemistry is tremendous. We’re the most unselfish group we’ve been around and the most connected team I’ve had. I think when you see that score tonight and the score last night (102-46 over Fort Payne), that’s why.

“Just the way we’re all connected defensively we’re making it tough for teams to score. It’s not one person doing this or that, it’s every single one of them. The guys you expect to be really good were good, but it’s all of them working together as one that’s making it happen.”

Garrett scored seven straight points to help the Yellow Jackets jump out to a 9-2 lead and then added six more as the lead went to 17-7. Leonard then buried three baskets to extend the lead to 24-9.

Taylor took over the second quarter with eight points and eight rebounds as the Jackets pushed to lead to 37-19.

The Oxford defense continued to suffocate the Bears in the third quarter as it allowed only three field goals. Garrett, meanwhile, erupted for another 11 points to take the lead to 55-30.

The clock ran in the fourth quarter and so did the Jackets, continuing a 15-point run that opened the lead to 66-30.
