BOAZ —
Glencoe gained a strong measure of revenge and won its first Etowah County Tournament girls title since 2011 Friday with a 39-36 victory over a Southside team that beat it in the finals a year ago.

Tournament MVP Ashley Morgan and Lauren Cole each scored 10 points for the Lady Jackets (14-7). Morgan had five points in the fourth quarter to help her team stave off Southside’s comeback bid.

“The game went exactly like we expected and prepared for,” Glencoe coach Daniel Cook said. “Both team battled from the top to the end.

“Southside did a good job of slowing down our tempo, but we were able to make small runs in our transition offense during the game that really ended up being the difference.”

Late in the third quarter the Lady Jackets were leading 23-20. Seniors Cami Zahorscak and Cole then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take the lead to nine going into the fourth quarter. Zahorscak hit three 3s in the game and finished with nine points.

Morgan earned MVP honors as much for her defense and floor play as anything. She scored only four points in the semifinals, but locked down on Sardis’ best player and Friday held one of Southside’s top players in check.
